Sorry Alan, I don't know, the shots were taken in the shop. I thought a little earlier
thats why the photos look so cramped
Virginia City was in the heart of the gold and silver rush, really quite distant from any popular civilization. Must have took an effort to get it there. But they had the money. Kind of like the tech people of today

A kind of rail bus, as is the vehicle Pieter photographed in Poland. Indeed it is difficult to photograph such large subjects in tight spaces That is where wide/ultra wide lens are useful. Interesting! Thanks for sharing.

This is a cart from commuter train, Kelly. These trains were in use in Poland until not too long ago.

Ah, Ok, my mistake. Thanks, Jack! And BTW, your photo reminded me that Steamtown is a place I'd very much like to visit someday! In fact, Pennsylvania has many Railroad places of interest that I'd like to visit.
You are from Poland and living in the US -- or the other way around?

Kelly

Retirement is (?) nice thing. It let you live here and there.

I know what you mean, but when we travel back to Germany we have to rely on staying with friends and family, or hotels, so we are mostly here in Utah! But at least we have time to travel since retiring!

Lovely image, Kelly. Were you able to witness regular steam hauled trains or did they finish too early for you? I'm glad I experienced it in UK, pity it didn't last a bit longer though.

Thank you, Alan!
I did see a few regular steam trains in my younger years living in Germany. Probably the last ones in the 60s. We didn't live near a rail line so I didn't see many. My father moved our family to Germany in 1955. I was about 6 years old. There may still have been steam where we lived in Virginia, though it would have been near the end for steam, but I never saw one, or at least I don't remember any. I received my first HO scale model locomotive and train from Dad as a Christmas gift shortly after moving to Germany, It was a Fleischmann BR-01 which I still have. On the chassis it says, "made in US Zone" (not made in Germany or West Germany)! Dad loved trains and cameras and photography. I suppose that is where my interests come from!
In the mid 60s our High School band was invited to a band festival in Berlin. We had to travel by train at night. The train was pulled by an electric locomotive, but at the border, the locomotive was switched over to an East German steam engine. We were told to keep the coach's shade's down and not look out the windows (east German paranoia). But we were kids, so of course we did! I saw steam engines, and smelled cinders -- very exciting for me.
As for the Nevada Northern Railway -- the copper mine was closed about 1983 and the railroad ceased operation and was given to the city of Ely. It didn't take long for the railroad to take locomotive No. 40 out of retirement and pull trains for excited rail fans. Through grants and donations they have managed to keep the railroad operational and have been awarded the title of National Historic Site. One can find a lot of info about the railroad on their website here: https://www.nnry.com/
Of course, the Union Pacific Railroad operates two steam engines out of Cheyenne Wyoming, that occasionally pass through Utah pulling excursion trains on their mainline. Those are No. 844 adn 4014 (Big Boy).
Regards,
Kelly
