Paul,
Safety First was the motto of the Kennecott Copper company which operated the copper mine near Ely (and the open pit mine here in Salt Lake City). the Railroad dates back to 1906 and was built to haul copper orr from the mine. Kennecott shut the mine and the railroad down in 1983 and the railroad, all its track, buildings and equipment was turned over to the City of Ely. Everything is 100% original to the railroad and it has been deemed a National History Landmark. Locomotive 81 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philedelpia PA in 1917. It had been out of service until 2 years ago. It is currently in the Engine House for repairs. Steam Locomotive 93 is currently operational and Steam Locomotive 40 is in the shops for a complete overhaul. Nevada Northern Railway Ely is basically in the middle of nowhere on the Loneliest Highway in America, route 50. It is about a 3.5 hour drive from Salt Lake and 4 to 5 hours drive from Las Vegas. I've been there multiple times and love it. The railroad is amazing -- like steping back in time. Mark Basset and crew have performed wonders keeping everything maintained and operational with mostly volunteers and donations. Overhauling a steam locomotive costs milions of dollars, and they can't call the factory for spare parts. Most all parts they have to machine themselves in their machine shop. |

The British Rail Class 230 is a battery electric multiple unit converted by rolling stock manufacturer Vivarail who have since entered administration. The units were converted from obsolete London Underground D78 Stock, originally manufactured in 1980 by Metro-Cammell. Five of these were bought for the Wrexham to Bidston line which crosses from Wales into Merseyside but implementation has been protracted and troublesome.
One of the units is seen here approaching Wrexham General. The interior. |

Coastal Pacific - Aotearoa
This train runs between Christchurch and Picton, the small harbor town, where ferries to the northern island depart/arrive. The following images have all been taken during the ride on this 1067mm narrow gauge railway to Picton. Over long stretches the tracks run parallel to Road #1, the main road running from north to south, on both islands. #1 #2 #3 #4 Trainspotters #5 #6 #7 #8 Sony ILCE-7RM4A with Tamron 28-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD |

An hour to kill between trains at Crewe on my return from the Birmingham DM.
Network Rail infrastructure train. The class 56 locomotive is over 40 years old, built by British Rail Engineering Limited with a Ruston-Paxman power unit developing 3,250 bhp (2,423 kW). Avanti Pendolino wearing a Pride livery. Class 67 hauled Cardiff to Manchester service. The locomotive dates from 2000, built by Alstom in Valencia, Spain with drive components from General Motors. |

Photo charter on the Vale of Rheidol Railway.
1. Start of day preparation at Aberystwyth. 2. Number 7 in the shed. The railway was opened in 1902 to facilitate transport of lead and timber and passed into Great Western Railway ownership in 1923. By this time, the freight business wasn't viable but the line continued to serve passengers. The locomotives and carriages currently in use were built for the line by the Great Western Railway between 1923 and 1938, numbers 7, 8 and 9. At Nationalisation, the railway became part of British Railways and survived through threats of closure to become the last steam line owned by British Rail until privatised in 1989. 3. Our charter stopped at several photogenic spots along the line to allow photography. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. The terminus at Devils Bridge. |
