You've done it again, Alan! Another beautiful set! All great photos, but I think #3 and 9 are favorites!
And Phil, I love the perspective of your locomotive photo! Regards, Kelly |

UP 833 stood on display in Pioneer Park, Salt Lake City after being donated to the city by the Union Pacific. It was later moved the Union Station Railroad Museum in Ogden. You can see the boiler mantel and insulation has been removed. Part of the reason it is less shiny. Possibly some parts have been used to service it's sister locomotive, 844 which, as I understand it, is the only steam locomotive in the USA, never retired from service on a mainline railroad. Btw, Big Boy 4014 has been standing at Salt Lake Centra since July 4th and will depart today for Elko, Nevada. I managed to capture a few photos which I will post later. Kelly |

Eagerly waiting Kelly, yes that picture of 833 was taken in Ogden Utah (a great day)
Looks like Big Boy is committed on Interstate 80 corridor, the countries main coast to cost Highway and crossing over the infamous Donner Pass into Roseville California. Bravo for Big Boy Yes Fred, equally impressive, they are both the apex of steam technology of their day. Must have been also impressive when they were running in service___Big wheels turnin |

Big Boy departed Elko Nevada this morning. I got a few keepers here in SLC. It arrived in SLC earlier than scheduled so I missed it at any ideal locations. Sun location and lighting was not optimal in most locations. It backed into Salt Lake Central, which was an absolute zoo -- so many people. Also there was no public access so no way to get close to it. So photo opps were limited compared with 2019. When I finish culling and editing my favorites, I post one here with a link to an open view thread and perhaps include a few from 2019 and earlier.

Too bad the circumstances, be interesting to see if you can make lemonade out of lemons. I'm sure you can
I know Elko well that would be a unique place to photograph Big Boy if there was daylight. You can see for miles in each direction. A real Western cowboy town as old as Nevada itself, with some fascinating backgrounds |

Big Boy 4014 was at the Roseville, CA UP Railroad yard this past weekend. It was very crowded.

Nice work, Gary! It is always challenging to photograph Big Boy with these crowds! But these photos show the interest and excitement that the public has over Big Boy's visit! When it was in Salt Lake, I met a fellow that came all the way from Munich, Germany to see and follow the Big Boy from Cheyenne!

Thanks Kelly. I wish they would have had a viewing platform. It would have made seeing and photographing the engine a lot easier.
I heard that there were people that drove up from SoCal to see Big Boy. |

I viewed it coming down Echo Canyon at one of my favorite spots. We were on the opposite side of the tracks from most of the fans (Dale from Toy Man TV was taking video from there), and fellow came over from the other side to warn us that there was a huge rattle snake over there and to watch out for it when we came back to where our cars where parked. Anyway that fellow was from SoCal and came all the way out here to follow it from Cheyenne. I guess he lives in Pomona and grew up near where UP 4014 stood on display for many years.
The Big Boys and Challengers were built to haul freight over the steep grades from Ogden to Cheyenne, so back in the day, they wouldn't have have been seen in Roseville. I guess that wouldn't have been UP territory anyway -- Southern Pacific and Western Pacific. SP Cab forward territory as in the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. I did go to Depot Days in Cheyenne a couple times while they were restoring 4014 and they had scaffolding around it that gave us a close look. Did you hear that 4014 hit a tree in Donner Pass on the way back eastward? they had to stop because cylender cocks were damaged. 4014 hits tree in Donner Pass Also if you watch videos you will see that they are using a Western Pacific Heritage diesel behind 4014. I had not heard that 4014 had hit a tree in the Donner Pass. You would have through they would have check the line before letting 4014 go that route.
