Finished processing one of my "Big Boy" albums, Union Pacific 4005. Denver, Colorado

This was the only disappointment of my whole trip. A trip that was filled w one nice surprise after another. The engine was in a "transportation" museum w one other engine, sardined in w cars against a back wall, making it impossible to get a complete picture of it.

But on the other hand it was not a disappointment being in the presence of a true legend of the West. So I did the next best thing; I hope I was able to get some unique close ups of a Big Boy.

4005 has the distinction of being the only one that was involved in a fatality. The train engineer died in a role over accident. The repairs to its side are visible in the photos.
It was also converted to an oil burner, but its huge size couldn't keep a fire.

this is the only complete photo of it I have

During the Autumn, Network Rail run a number of Rail Head Treatment Trains to improve track conditions during the leaf fall season. This is done using a combination of water cannons and the application of sandite (a thick sand based paste that improves adhesion) to the rail surface.

Sandite is applied through pipes located on one of the bogies of one of the vehicles while water canons spray water from the centre of one of the vehicles. Sandite and spraying are only carried out at a maximum speed of 40mph. Sandite application stops if the train drops below 10mph.

Here class 56 number 56087 storms past Llanfair PG signal box, not spraying at this point and running at line speed. The signal box dates from around 1870 and was long since downgraded to a level crossing keeper's hut. The top of the Marquess of Anglesey's column can be seen amongst the trees. This is a Greek doric column dedicated to Henry William Paget, the first Marquess of Anglesey, to commemorate his valour particularly at the Battle of Waterloo. The column is a privately owned Grade II* listed building but currently closed to the public on safety grounds.

56113 and 56087 are again on the North Wales Rail Head Treatment Train, seen here at Rhosneigr on their way to Holyhead with the Afon Crigyll flowing away from the train. (Afon is Welsh for "river")

The same pair pass Rhosneigr station.

Great pics, Josef!
I wish we could travel back in time into the 1950s and 1960s (and take our cameras with us)!

Engine #93: Betwen the trees just below the telegraph line?
All the best, Harald.

Hello harald; you nailed it. You are Good!
Thats exactly #93. I was wandering around and heard the train whistle, thats the pic I got. It was magical being there, the blue sky, high desert, etc.

Yes Harald, those are the "Golden Age" of many, many things, as you know, Including our youth
