Two famous murals painted by Dutch artist Peter Alma (1886 - 1969) in the Amstelstation (Amsterdam)

These were both painted in the period 1937-1939 and stood the test of time and are still there today!

That is sometimes referred to as "dumb walking"!

Chester station, designed by the architect Francis Thompson, and constructed by Thomas Brassey, opened on 1st August 1848.



Opened in August 1836, Liverpool Lime Street is the oldest still-operating grand terminus mainline station in the world. There is a seperate underground level for the Merseyrail third rail electric network.

Built in 1848, Shrewsbury station is designated a grade II listed building. It is one of the key network hubs of Transport for Wales, serving lines from Birmingham to the mid Wales coast, the Marches line along the England/Wales border and the very rural Central Wales Line.




The platforms are numbered 3 to 7 from left to right. Platform 3, where I'm standing, is used infrequently as it's separated from the others by a subway. The bridge once also connected the platforms but is now used only as a pedestrian passageway.


So what happened to platforms 1 and 2? They were here, behind me, long since disused and overgrown.

A Transport for Wales service calls at platform 4. The signal box at the north end of the station is still operational. Shrewsbury retains some delightful old semaphore signals along with more modern colour light signals.


At the south end is now the world's largest manually operated signal box, 89 of its original 180 levers are still in use.

Lift from platform 3




On platform 3 is a metal plaque listing (with their respective stations of employment) 42 employees of the London and North Western and Great Western Joint Railways who died serving in the armed forces in 'the Great War', with figures of a soldier and sailor and representations of a cannon and steamship. Arwel Hughes composed the Welsh hymn "Tydi a roddaist" in 20 minutes during a wait between train connections in 1938. A commemmorative plaque is situated below the war memorial.


Opposite platform 7 is a high concrete wall that divides the rest of the station from what could be considered to be platform 8. This platform does not see any use and was built for transporting prisoners from HM Prison Shrewsbury. It is believed that this platform was only used a few times each year between 1868 up until just before the First World War.
