I hadn't gone out to shoot this waka. I'd 'stumbled across it when I drove out to the coast near my home and saw it at Duders Beach.
I recognised it immediately as the waka my friend Jef had crewed in on one of it's Pacific voyages and struck up a conversation with the crew.

Unlike western tradition, Polynesian waka are always male. Their entire being is wrapped up in those cultures and they are seen as living creatures.
In referring to this one, I would always say 'he'.
Here is part of his story; it hasn't ended and his lore will be told for generations to come: https://www.thevoyage.co.nz/en/vessels/haunui

Nice shot Mike, the person, the vessel and the story make it all very interesting.

At first I thought it was a film shot, you achieved a very "filmish" rendereing with your PP

thanks; I like telling stories with photographs.

I shoot a lot of film but still sometimes grab digital. Digital can just be too clean and smooth at times so I might search for 'the look' I want with DxO's Film Pack. Similar to searching for the best print in a darkroom I guess.

Great scale!

I've been to Firenze; my wife's Nana was born there.
We took our mountain bikes all the way from New Zealand and rode around on our way to a race in Ireland.

Here's my bamboo single speed bike overlooking Firenze......or is that Bologna?
