Dead Australian Immigrant

Pre human settlement, New Zealand only had one native mammal; the bat. Maori arriving from Polynesia first brought rats and pigs (the first intentionally but the 2nd by accident). European settlement saw an explosion in mammals introduction as people thought they saw big commercial opportunities. Sheep and cattle have proven both lucrative and destructive but some animals added virtually nothing while creating massive damage to the eco-system. Rabbits, deer and goats are partiular problems but one of the worst is the possum from Australia. Every night these animals destroy thousands of tonnes of forest, eat fruits that native birds rely on and even eat young chicks. They also carry and spread bovine Tb to cattle. In Australia these are a protected species: In New Zealand, they are a hated pest and, for most Kiwis, this is when we see them: dead on the roads!

Nice shots Mike, but not totally in line with the 'rules; of this thread (as mentioned on page 1)

Just to recap what this thread is about: there are only three simple rules that must be fulfilled to post a photo in here:

  • The photo you post must be selected from your gallery in a random way (or pseudo-random - if there are some computing purists around ). Use your calculator, or computer to generate some pseudo-random number. Or use dice or results of your national lottery, or whatever ...
  • The first shot selected must be posted, i.e. no cheating is allowed because e.g. "that first photos was so awful"
  • No more than one photo per day is allowed.

Of course all are encouraged to comment others work and discuss various aspects of posted photos.

Oh, OK. It's easy to forget as so many seem not so random. However, I am randomly cruising my flickr portfolio this morning.
