I have begun to see some odd behaviour in Lightroom imports of RAW files (ARW) from my A99ii. It manifests on multiple SD cards and from both camera slots. It only affects a few files, perhaps 1%.

I get a bar of purple noise across the frame rendering the shot useless.

However, when I open the same file in Irfanview all is fine, I can save it in another format and import it into LR without any problems.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

I would expect this would be an error in your GPU. Try disabling the GPU acceleration. Updating video drivers might fix it too.

Did you try other converters?

I noticed opinions differ whether Irfanview does a RAW-conversion or uses the embedded JPG. Did you try Adobe Camera Raw? Should give the same results as it should be embedded in lightroom, but still. And try Sony Imaging Edge. (Darktable, RAWTherapee)

And if QuietOC's advice works, well, then you know the problem

Thanks for the input. I tried Sony Imaging Edge - the file imported with no problem, I saved as another ARW - and LR imported that faultlessly.

So I went back and removed the file from the LR catalogue and re-imported it - and it was fine.

Needless to say having an inconsistent error makes it harder to track down.

As it seems to be a software glitch within LR and the associated drivers etc. I shall try a few imports with the GPU off and see if I still get the problem.

I have the same problem with a very low percentage of raw A700 shots when importing in Lightroom (v. 6.14), but there the purple band is at the top of the frame so a little cropping usually removes it and usually makes the shot still usable. If I shoot raw+jpg the jpg doesn't have it and I never tried importing it in another program but after these "tips" here I'm definitely going to try that.

I tried another file with the error - I deleted it from my hard disk using LR and re-imported from the SD card. It was fine.

I also tried removing the file from LR (not deleting) and re-imported. The noise was still there.

So I looked at the file using Imaging Edge - the noise was there. Interestingly the image was clean when selected but the noise appeared as the file loaded - so the preview is clean.

It seems that the file is being corrupted by LR when copying from the SD card to the hard disk and that Irfanview is indeed only using the built-in preview.

I shall delete and re-import when I see this happen in the future.
