Knowing what I do now, I'd say the entire question about Post-Processing essentially hinges on only 1 real question:
To Adobe or Not? Everything else depends on the answer to this one really. FWIW I also intend to buy in the next 24 months the Topaz Labs suite (Gigapixel, Sharpen AI and DeNoise - but will probably not use the latter) and Capture One 21/22 (21 is still available in the 'Sony only' discount flavour in physical shops) and use C1 pretty much solely for colour adjustments. Me being me, I'll probably then learn that the key feature(s) I need for the photo project which will come to define my life can only be done on Adobe and then I will say some VERY BAD WORDS our loud. |

I've never used PL5 only PL4 because whilst it is quicker in Deep Prime, I didn't need the speed.
As to what I did before: I'm going to be very honest and vulnerable here; I didn't. As-in I took lots of raws but I didn't process them at all (didn't have the time or capacity: SEN child, medical stuff, family stuff, work stuff) until I bought a gaming pc in the first week of lockdown and then PL4 and committed to learning and doing. I will say that I research like a man possessed and am absolutely certain that nothing (ie NOT Topaz Denoise, Not ON1's whatever, Not Luminar, Not Adobe something-or-the-other) can do as much for high-iso photos than Photolab/Pure Raw and probably nothing else can match it for optical corrections likewise. I forgot to mention: I also use Fast Raw viewer at -immediate-post-ingestion stage ie to cull the raws that won't get processed in Photolab, and have just bought Directory Opus as the ingestion stage and VERY basic DAM tool (ie date, time hierarchies and metadata tags and shortcut links). |

Very cool. I have never shot JPEG. Started many years ago with the KODAK NC2000. No jpeg, no preview, had to use Kodak software to open the file and as far as I can recall there was no recovering of anything... maybe 2 stops of latitude. I just kept going with RAW since then.
