What do I need to get remote flashes working with TTL and HSS on the A99v that I recently bought. I have 3 Minolta 5600's, can I get those to work?

I wil need an adapter to get the 5600 but I think I have read HSS will not work?

The simplest solution to wireless flash is to buy the Sony HVL-F20M .
https://www.mhohner.de/sony-minolta/oneflash/hvl-f20m

Note that that's the "M" model , not the "AM" model .
The one marked "AM" is for the earlier Sony/Minolta iISO hotshoe , not the later/current Sony multi-interface shoe (MIS ) .

Where did you read that the Sony a99 doesn't do Wireless HSS ?
Regardless of if the flash is mounted via it's adapter or fired wirelessly , it should work fine .
See the specifications here ; https://www.mhohner.de/sony-minolta/onebody/a99

C & C welcome.

I'm using phottix Odin (1st gen) adapters for this (works even on the a7-series with converters - though only the orginal sony adapters!).

You could use the OdinII controller on the A99 - and get some used Odin 1gen receivers for the 5600's (with the Minolta iISO-foot).

I've used them at speeds up to 1/1000' with HSS (i'm also using the minolta/Sony version of the 5600).

2 Things to know to get both WL and TTL HSS to work on a body like the A99. WL will only be available in the optical WL protocol as available on your 5600 units. Radio control that is now available either through the newer models of flash units or through the Sony Radio Remotes will not work on the A99 (only on the A99M2 and a select few mirrorless bodies) and they would also not operate properly with the 5600's (Manual only, No TTL)

1)You need a control flash (the 5600 can not be set-up on this body to provide that) so your choice is going to be with a Sony ADP-MAA adapter between flash and body(other brands may work or not so a generic one is a risk of malfunction or no function):
- Sony HVL-F20AM
- Sony HVL-F43AM in CTRL mode (CTRL2 in the options)
- Sony HVL-F56AM in CTRL mode (CTRL2 in the options)

Or without adapter (direct mount on your body):
- Sony HVL-F20M
- Sony HVL-F32M
- Sony HVL-F43M in CTRL mode (CTRL2 in the options)
- Sony HVL-F60M in CTRL mode (CTRL2 in the options)

Do not get or try HVL-F28RM, F45RM, F60RM, F46RM or F60RM2 since these either lost WL capability with the older WL flash protocol (HVL-F45RM, F60RM) or they have no optical WL capability HVL-F28RM, F45RM, F60RM2)

2) As for getting HSS working, the 5600HS(D) units require that the flash head is to be aimed as a direct flash would be when mounted on a body so any bounce/tilt position will disable the HSS.

Phottix Odin was also a possibility but more and more difficult to find.

The easiest thing for my a99 was to buy a Godox AD200 Pro and a Godox X1Ts. I've been using the HVL-F20M for some time to limited success. It seems to work best when paired with the HVL-F56AM simply because it's easier to aim the IR receiver at the HVL-F20M trigger..... unless the camera is in portrait orientation or it's a bright day or the lights are behind you or behind the subject or you have a modifier on the lights or the planets haven't aligned. The HVL-F43M makes a better trigger because you can actually aim it, but the receivers have to be clustered. With all Sony flashes the HSS is limited locked down strait ahead, Good luck hitting the IR receiver. For the most part with HSS I used a TTL cable and a pole.

my favourite Q...
1st of all, congrats on your purchase, A.Sud!
(do you have a name?).

finding a solution has been my mission in life for the last 4, 5 years. stumbled upon a few options, all rather pricey.
it would have been fairly easy to buy a couple of 3rd party flash guns + matching trigger/receivers, but couldn't believe there wouldn't be a way to use the Sony/Minolta flash guns I had lying around, 3 of which still a match with A99; Minolta 5600hs, Sony hvl58 & dedicated Sony hvl60 (i.e. another approx. E 2,000 down the drain?).

btw- each and every one of my 3rd party flash cables, 'for Sony', supporting TTL, was designed for the OLD hotshoe, and therefore adapters are a must. (quite a stack when using the flash bracket ). (set me back +/- E 37, if I recall correctly).
the other secret to proper flash gun behaviour / decent battery life are -rechargeable- eneloop batteries! (as I learned from A., who did lots of weddings).

most of the strobist gurus either advise 3rd party flash systems (e.g. Cactus, Godox), use Canikon systems or say you can trigger the flash guns with the built-in flash aboard your camera (hehe). Sony's very own RADIO commander is no match with A99, not even with A9 or A1. (wireless flash according to Sony -in dutch- ).

what works -only looked at sets that support HSS + A99 and its dedicated flash gun, since nothing is promised for the rest-
as Ivo / minolta_mutley said: PHOTTIX!
look here?
https://frankdoorhof.com/web/2012/11/sony-a99-wireless-strobe-solution/
Odin I & Odin II.
downside? $$$$$$$$$$$$ receivers no longer available!
I called Kamera Express (a large dutch camera store). the 'expert' said the only option w/b to buy a new flash system and pres. a new camera too.

and then I found my BD prezzie- much cheaper, supports HSS, arrived 2 days ago!
1 Godox X Pro-S + 4, FOUR times Godox X1 receiver, een Marktplaatsje / on the dutch Ë-bay'. (set me back E 100).
(yayyy. haven't tried it yet, but at least A99 and hvl60 are listed. and so are Godox studio lights :)).

while looking for a Sony radio trigger link, I just found THIS. compatible with Sony ADI/P-TTL + HSS. also an option?
(obvious by now, I'm by no means an expert- all I can think of, if everything else fails, is to use a small flashgun on top of the camera to trigger the rest with?).

lastly- nothing less intuitive and unforgiving than an hi-end Sony flashgun! as Michel and Lee mentioned- the swivel head needs to look straight ahead! when tilted as much as 0.00000001 degree, hardly noticeable, HSS will vanish from the screen!

best of luck!
hope you'll keep us posted?

The solution I chose was the Sony HVL-F43M. It works directly on the camera, of course, and can also control my two 5600s. Consider it if your budget allows. It's a piece of gear that matches the quality of those Minoltas.

I think I have read HSS will not work?

Not true. But as already mentioned, keep the flash heads pointed straight forward when you use that.

Although this is an old post now, the thing that worked best for me with A99 was Godox. Even though I have multiple Sony flash, the newer Godox tech works properly every time.

like others have said - definitely go for something not Sony. I'm really surprised that the main manufacturers have stuck with old school flashguns and effectively old school tech.

For a super cheap but fun option get yourself a couple of either the v4, v5 or v6 Cactus transmitter and receiver combos and buy some ancient but cheap Vivtar 285 varipower flash guns - they are the ones with the little dial on the front. you can probably get 3 for like $80 of the flashguns.

For all round versatility and exceptional quality - meaning all the boxes ticked go with the Godox 200 pro type and transmitter. They also do a 300 and 400 version (more watts) but the 200's are very juicy already - you get studio quality strobes with the versatility of a flashgun and all the features plus battery life etc etc. Maximum creativity.
