I am looking into renting a camera and lens for a trip to Disney with my grandkids. I don't want to bring my A-mount dinosaur, so I am thinking E-mount, but want full frame and a lens with flexible reach.
I was thinking A7-III and 24-105 F4 combo?. Do you guys think this is a good choice? The better question = where can something like this be rented for about 10 days? I rented a lens once from lensrentals dot com but they don't seem to have a lot of available stuff. Not interested in APS-C bodies. |

LensRentals and BorrowLenses are the usual suspects for getting gear delivered to your door.
In the city there is AbelCine, CSIrentals, ImagingWorldRentals. Adorama has rentals but I haven't used them. I think for these places you have to pick up from them, they cater to big orders for film rentals, but since there are a lot of films shot on photo cameras they have those also. I think the a7iii has the EyeAF feature which is probably what you want, I'm assuming the 24-105 as a G lens gets all the AF features. |

I've never rented (and most likely never will) but it seemed to me that rental costs (plus shipping, insurance etc.) tend to be high enough for a longish rental that it might not be a bad idea to buy used and sell once you're done.
Or a pocket camera like a Sony RX100 - VII would work quite well for a family vacation. |

I would not bother with the A7 III for rental, I would take something with the modern Real-Time Tracking AF, so, the A7 IV makes the most sense.
What doe you mean that Lensrentals.com don't seem to have a lot of stuff? They have the A7 iv (and III) and the 24-105G. And many more: FE Lenses: https://www.lensrentals.com/rent/photo/sony/lenses/fe-mount-lenses E-mount cameras: https://www.lensrentals.com/rent/photo/sony/cameras/e-mount You have experience with them, why not use them again? Unless your fine with bothering with buying and selling stuff like Sashi suggested. |

When I looked, I checked the box for "Hide out of stock", and the list got real small. Now when I do the same, the stuff is there. Ghost in the machine I guess.

The A7III and 24-105 G OSS should work well together. It is not the lightest zoom lens. I always like the image quality I get with it.
All A7 cameras have Eye AF. The third generation bodies were updated to have Real-time Eye AF--basically means you can just use the shutter to trigger it. The fourth generation have Real-time tracking, which is a much easier way to track subjects. It doesn't work that well on the A7RIV. It may work better on the A7C and probably works better on the A7SIII and A7IV. |

What's wrong with your A-mount dinosaur? Familiarity with your kit is usually a plus.

It is an A-700 and my lenses aren't great ones. As this is probably a once in a lifetime trip for me (I'm not getting any younger), I would like to have the best images possible. Cameras have evolved a lot since the A-700 was king (for about a week LOL).

I'll agree, to a point. I took my dinosaur for a walk around town with the SAL1650 . No video and a tilt screen would have been nice but was satisfied with the results. For a "once in a lifetime" photo op expedition with fast moving kids in dodgy light, it wouldn't be my first choice, not even my back-up. Edited by LAbernethy - 25 January 2022 at 04:44 |
