(In Japanese)

The description that only one central AF point is valid at 500 REF is not a mistake by copy and paste, but an actual constraint. (why?)
The showroom had a compatibility list ready.

And more.

Report videos have been added.
So, I noticed that the AF point of 500REF is not only one point in the center but multiple points near the center.

PS.
To nobody: Ginza is in Tokyo, not Osaka.

Bit of a surprise if it was just the center point as tests with a re-chipped 500REF on an A99ii had it focus through the frame...with one caveat that I haven't seen any real proof on how well it focused.

My monster chip bought from ebay arrived this morn. I will install it this weekend and report back my experience back to this forum.

Congrats.
It may be extra caution, but just in case.

You must check the notice, "There are three types of screws that are very similar but have slightly different lengths, and if you put them back in the wrong way, the insulation will be destroyed and EA4 will break."

The description in the manual lacks "another four screws to be removed", and it is dangerous to remove the cover without knowing it.

It is necessary to use common sense, such as not mixing the removed screws or not applying too much force.

It took me the best part of an hour plus half a beer to install chip (not bad for a sworn luddite). The initial shots with the 200 HS G on A7Riii are good. I now need to put it through its paces and finish the rest of the beer.

I also purchased one off of eBay and installed it last night. It took about 10 minutes after watching Gary Friedman's video on it.

My initial impressions are very mixed. As Gary noted, the AF is jerky and slow, especially from full out-of-focus to in-focus. Many times it just hunts and fails to lock, especially with lower-contrast scenes and in low light. I would say the stock LA-EA4 is way faster and more reliable to focus.

But of course, the positives are that you get a much wider focus area and more selectable points, eye AF, and no SLT mirror. You also -- as far as I can tell -- don't need to AF micro adjust. I've got a couple lenses that need correction on the a99ii, but not so when used on this adapter.

I would also say that when it does nail the focus, it really nails it. And the overall IQ does improve noticeably without the mirror, at least when viewing images at 100%. This allows for tighter crops that are still clean.

So, like I said, a mixed bag. In my opinion, it's not an ideal solution to adapt screw-drive lenses for anything but reasonably static or slow-moving subjects. I can understand why Gary chose not to take it on as a distributor at this time, though hopefully it can improve with firmware updates in the future.

At the moment I've only tested with a handful of lenses (Minolta 50/1.4, 28/2, 100/2, and CZ135/1.8). I've got quite a few more supported lenses to try soon, but I want to wait till I can get back outdoors and give them a proper test (crazy California fires!). More to come.

This really surprises me, can you show some examples? I tested this with several lenses on the same camera/same subject (A6000) some time ago when I still had an LA-EA1 and LA-EA4 and other than the ~1/2 stop slower shutter speed with the LA-EA4 I couldn't see any differences between the shots (even when pixel peeping) with and without the pellicle mirror, among them the 35/2, 50/1.4 and 135/1.8
You can see the April Foolishness 2021 exhibition here Another great show of the talent we have on Dyxum

I had a feeling this would easily be the most controversial thing I said in the last post, but I've always noticed a difference between shooting the same lenses with my LA-EA3 (in manual focus) and the LA-EA4 (AF). Images had a very different noise profile, with the images sans mirror producing a finer grain at the same ISO. While I know that noise and image quality aren't the same thing, the fact that the mirror is affecting the noise does affect the overall perception of the IQ.

In order to test this properly, I'd have to undo the Monster mod to the LA-EA4 and do 1:1 tests. When I made the mod, I only tested the AF speed, not taking actual images for IQ comparisons. The mod is much slower in that regard.

I could provide comparisons against my a99ii -- where I think the difference is even more pronounced -- but that could also be due to the very different noise profiles of the two cameras and differences in their processing. The best way would really be the same adapter, same lens, same camera, same settings -- just with and without the mirror.

If I'm feeling like undoing this mod (and I might!), then I'll be sure to take before and after photos.

I have already posted it once, but I will post it again.
It is very difficult to meet the conditions, so I chose the one with the best image quality from the multiple shots.

9+EA4r

9+EA4
http://upload.a-system.net/photo/original/50228066171

9+EA3
http://upload.a-system.net/photo/original/50228284882

99II
http://upload.a-system.net/photo/original/50228061311

I bought an additional EA4 with a flaw in TLM, so I have both the original EA4 and EA4r.
If necessary, I can easily retest.

In my personal opinion, the TLM problem is not always constant due to the reflected stray light. And that's why APS-C has less problems.

Unlike LA-EA4, EA4r depends on the AF performance of the body, so reports of unknown body will cause discrepancies.

For lenses that are not suitable, it will be helpful to see if the 99II Fast Hybrid AF supports it and if there is a note in the LA-EA5 compatibility list.

Another problem is how much the lens wears because there is backlash in the case of screw drive.

While the EA4 moves in one direction at once, EA4r goes back and forth between contrast AF, so it is easily affected by backlash.

v02 has been released but is not available as the baidu download client is warned as "dangerous"...

The firmware of MonsterAdapter Magic Ring LA-EA4r v02 is officially released, and the new content is as follows:
Unlock the auto focus function of the following lenses:
focus:
Minolta/Sony AF 16mm F2.8 Fisheye
Minolta/Sony AF 28mm F2.8
Minolta/Sony AF 50mm F2.8 Macro (D)
Minolta AF 50mm F3.5 Macro
Minolta/Sony AF 100mm F2.8 Macro (D)
Minolta AF 100mm F2.8 Soft Focus
Minolta AF 135mm F2.8
Minolta AF 300mm F4 HS-APO G
Zoom:
Minolta AF [a:tel:17-35]17-35mm F3.5 G
Minolta AF [a:tel:28-70]28-70mm F2.8 G
Minolta AF [a:tel:70-210]70-210mm F4 Macro
Minolta AF [a:tel:80-200]80-200mm F2.8 HS-APO G
Problem fix:
1. Solve the problem that some lenses cannot AF correctly in some mounts (such as 135mm f1.8ZA);
2. Solve the problem of AF-S failure of LA-EA4r after A7R4 upgrade 1.2 firmware;
3. Fix the phenomenon that the lens aperture value in EXIF is not displayed correctly.

Dyxum friends,

I tried out my Sigma 500 4.5 EX APO with the A7III/LA-EA4R Monster adapter and.... it works! The lens never focused really quickly, but it seems to be nearly the same speed as my A99II, although the test was made in poor lighting, where either body could struggle. I will try the 800 5.6 APO tomorrow.

Sincerely,

A VERY satisfied customer

My initial tests with the LA-EA4r (Ver. 03)

No AF:

Sigma 28/1.8 EX DG -- E 28-70mm F3.5-4.5
SAL135F28 (no AF) -- E 28-70mm F3.5-4.5
Sigma 28-105/2.8-4 -- E 28-135mm F4.1-4.5
28-135/4-4.5 -- E 28-135mm F4.1-4.5
Tokina 35-300 -- E 75-300mm F4.5-5.6

50/3.5 -- E 50mm F3.5
100/2.8 D -- E 100mm F2.8
135/2.8 -- E 135mm F2.8

No Lens Compensation Support
No Focus Distance Support, 3-axis stabilization only.
AF System: Contrast AF gets stuck at either end of the focus range
Focal lengths and relative apertures are slightly off for some lenses.

Initial test was done on the A7RII. Focusing was much slower than the unmodified LA-EA4. Only AF-S and AF-C focusing modes are available. DMF is not available. AF works better on the A7III. AF hardly works at all on the NEX 5T.
