I am just starting to learn how to use this Lens on the A7r. I use a Novoflex Nex/Min-MC-MD adapter. I haven't used any of the other Rokkor 85mm so I can't compare it to them. I have found it is good for portraits and the softness setting should be used sparingly ( setting 3 IMHO is just too much( you might as well get a UV filter and smear vaseline over it!!) All the portraits, taken with this lens, I have are of family and close friends who don't want them on line. My wife generally doesn't like the pictures of her taken with the A7r the exception being the varisoft.   Heres a series of shots taken of a stall in Viennas Rathaus Christkindlemarkt. All were at wide open(F2.8) Softness settings were zero, 1, and 2.
