We spent a couple of days at Hastings point in northern New South Wales and all of these were from a low cliff top virtually without moving.

A view back to the beach looking south.

2 Searching for a wave.

3 Still looking

4 But I didn't think that wave any good, not that many were so I totally missed him leap from the jet ski straight onto his board which I hadn't seen done before

5

6 But he was good.

7 And one who paddled out.

8 And while I was looking enviously at a rather nice lens and set up.

9 A very loud roar almost made me drop the camera.

10 As an F/A hornet sped along the coastline, I didn't hear or see it coming unfortunately...
11

12 But a splash out to sea did catch my eye. A shot to give an idea where the following crops are coming from.

13 Where I would like to have been!

14 Except a man was killed a couple of weeks later when a whale came down on top of his boat.

15

16

17 And another.

18

It would have been a good test for the new A93

Thanks Michele, I've got many more of both surfers and whales but I thought 18 was way more than enough...

On the other hand α9 III's 24 MPix resolution might been disadvantage in those cropped whale pictures.

The camera rig in #8 looks to be video-oriented as I think that camera body hooked to the 200-600G is from FX-series (most likely FX3 or FX30 I think).

I love this series with the captions - a nice story, well presented with some great images as well.

Thanks Roger. Heikki, yes watching him he was shooting video. Regarding the 24MPix I was disappointed to hear that, I think alpha rumours were predicting a bigger sensor but maybe with all this AI software coming out we soon won't be needing a telephoto, just incredible resizing capabilities, and Topaz Photo AI are certainly making great strides in this direction. Not that I'm likely to be getting the A93 but I would like a trial run, I think it would be a good choice for my sports photography other than that I rarely even use the H+ setting let alone 120FPS!!!

Great series! I love the whale pics - but the F-18 in front of that wall of clouds isn't bad either!

TFS, Peter!

Peter, a great set showcasing the rich diversity of photographic opportunities and subject matter on the coast there.
Something for everyone - seascape, surfing action, RAAF fighter jets, and a breaching migrating humpback whale.
Impressed with the latter in particular #14, and the detail in those cropped images.

Thanks everyone, as I said I thought 18 shots way too many but I could have made it a lot more "diverse" by adding shots from the last time we visited when the movie 'Aquaman' was being filmed on top of the bluff, they had built a lighthouse exactly where I was standing for these shots and Nicole Kidman had a pretty impressive motorhome on set too. The local surfers weren't happy at all!!

I really enjoyed this series @Brandy and thanks for sharing. I confess the humpback whales were my favourite, but that may be coloured by my conservation creds!

Thanks. I've been travelling up to Queensland for the past fifty years and it's certainly gratifying to see how their numbers have increased especially in recent years. They're still hard to photograph though as you never know quite where they're going to breach and then you've got a fraction of a second to target them. Still increased numbers has to mean increased opportunities to practice, just wish they'd come in a little closer to shore
