Edward VIII reigned for less than a year - so there aren't a lot of post boxes bearing his cipher. This is one of the most common version of those that survive (around 120 still in use).

Yes, and functional. Basically a 1970s time warp.

Someone with an impressive eye for history decided to do this. It's the sort of thing you might expect to get on a 25th anniversary casting or one celebrating a major event - not so much on the introduction of a radical redesign of the UK pillar box. It is not an add-on the 'plaque' is part of the main body casting.

Hi Howard - the Scots got a bee in their bonnets about Elizabeth II not being the 2nd of Scotland (fair point). In a bit national fervour activists defaced many post boxes in the 1950s. The Post Office opted to use a Scottish crown instead of the English crown seen on boxes south of the border and to omit the royal cipher rather than confuse matters more by have EiR (Elizabeth I) or ER (plain ELizabeth) in Scotland. The Scots didn't get so worked up about telephone boxes - as you can see from the English crown here. They had a similar problem recently when they decided to paint four post boxes to commemorate the recent coronation - the Scots took umbrage for some reason (Charles the 3rd of both countries so it wasn't that) - anyway, the box in Edinburgh got vandalised within a few hours of its fancy paint job and was red again in no time. |
