OK, let me open this edition.

Flamethrower recut.


I've recut the last picture of the previous version. The previous I liked because the setting but it made the picture a bit flat, now the flames and red color of the car are more popping out.

Ah found the issue why 'photobucket' was ruining my colors. My browser (IE something) could not handle my color profile (adobeRGB). Now I've changed it to sRGB and that seems to work.

EK, first shot turned out very nice, as you already said for a 1/30 shutter. You must have a very steady hand and lots of panning practice. What kind of car is this, some sort of Mazda formula 3 car?

EK - Some cracking good images in here; loved the combination of the Lotus and Mini, and the pan of the single seater does come across exceptionally well. Take out for me though was the last one with the RX-7 and the Sports racer; loved the combination of the lead-in of the track to the cars and then up into the stands and layers caused by the seating. Probably a lucky combination but for me the whole thing works very well on more than one level.

Thanks for these and hope to see some more soon (I'm also off to Brands Hatch on Monday for this years Historic Festival so hopefully a real glut of images to come - the entrance list is just amazing.....)

OK as promised I've edited my shots from the DTM (Deutsche Toeringwagen Meisterschaft, German salooncar championships) on the fantastic circuit of Zandvoort (F1 raced here till 1985). The track is situated in the Dunes near to Amsterdam which gives it a great athmosphere but due to the fences and commercial stuff a lousy place to take pictures. Only suitable actually for panning shots if you don't have a pass to get near the track.

So the following will all be panning shot, which I now reasonably master, but they get a bit boring in the end. So to get some extra tension in the shots I did some extreme cropping which (e.g. tilted or lots of air, which is beautifull in Holland). If you have more tips to get these type of shots more exciting please let me know.

All shot with an A700 using a 80-200APO or a 50mm F/1.4 at shutterspeeds between 1/80 to 1/125, iso100 and manual focus. Comments are ofcourse welcome.

1. High speed overtake in the Porsche supercup support series.


2. Porsche supercup winner from Holland (Jeroen Bleekemolen), ofcourse he has the home advantage but is a very reknown Porsche works driver.


3. F3 Euroseries support series, extreme crop to show the clouds.


4. Another F3 car with a slightly differend crop.


Then some pictures of the main series, the DTM. Don't get fooled by the saloon car looks, these are full racecars. They have a tubular frame with a big V8 4 liter engine producing around 490HP weighing a totall of around 1000kg. This year is a transition year for the new car set-up for next year which will consist of a carbon monocoque design. Next to Audi and Mercedes also BMW and maybe Seat will then enter the series.

5. Gravel excursion.


6. Scheider in the ABT audi car.


7. Suzie Stoddard, daughter of Paul who previous owned the Minardi F1 team and the Minardi USA CART team.


8. Red Bull is everywhere.


9. Chrome Mercedes.


10. Local hero Van der Zande with a badly tuned Mercedes (repost in which I updated the color profile and tweaked the colors slightly).


11. Maiden victory for Mike Rockenfeller in the Audi.

@paso144 - It's an Formula Atlantic, the fastest of the SCCA Formula classes. As far as steady hands, I only started shooting motor sports last year but I've shot match rifle and pistol since I was a kid. I've also been blessed with a good job and money to tune my equipment. I've settled in on the A700, Tokina AT-X Pro II 28-70 f2.6 - 2.8 and Minolta 80-200 f2.8 APO HS G, with a Tokina AT-X 100-300 f4 + Kenko DGX 1.4x TC for longer shots. I used to use a MinO 35-105 like you (I may yet replace it) but it got struck by some debris at a race (hazard of getting as close as I do) which scratched the lens.

I've also challenged myself to see how slow I can pan just so I can rub it in the noses of the canikon shooters at the track (what with all the fancy features of their cameras that are supposed to make it easy). I can get a few keepers at 1/20s but I'm still working on even slower. It also helps that I have my "special place", the apex of Turn 6, where the cars are less than 10 meters from me, or less, and stay parallel to me for several seconds.

@owenn01 - Thanks. I'm waiting with baited breath for yours. There's always cars I don't get to see in them. The shot with the Mazda and the Spec Racer Ford was actually more planned than you might think. As paso144 noted, panning gets a tad boring after a while so I've been trying to plan my shots to be more interesting.

I have a few more to post but Smugmug appears to be down at the moment so I'll do it tomorrow.

I love watching Spec Miata races. They bump and swipe each other; go four wide into turns or take them far too fast, like these guys.

No 2 is a Holden Commodore. The V8 supercars are basically a Ford vs Holden (General Motors) event. In Australia, you're either a "Ford man" or a "Holden man", sort of like Canon vs Nikon. There's a great deal of rivalry between the teams and the racing is very good to watch. The cars have lots of grunt with lots of very close racing. The car belongs to Jamie Whincup.
