Hi guys,

one feels a little silly posting a bird shot after Gustav showed his work....but hey...here goes (my first bird post in the age of Gustav)
#1. European roller (Coracias garrulus): this bird is VERY rare in Austria, only a population of a few dozens in a valley in Styria exist.
I went there with my father, and we were lucky spotting a few immediately.

#2. Australian eagle at raptor farm:

#3. Eagle owl (bubo bubo), we could see our reflections in its eyes:

#4. ? Some sort of owl reminding me of Grandpa Munster, shot through wire fence:

#5. Couple of kestrels

#6. kingfisher...well...I gave it my best shot...we walked near a lake shore, and there it sat for 2 seconds before it took off.
Together with Gustav's wonderful shots I realized that I might need a tent...

All with A700 + 400/4.5(+ 1,4 TC on some) + CZ135/1.8
best regards,
Bernd

Nice stuff, Bernd. I particularly like Grandpa Munster. I've never seen a bird's eye that looked like the eye of the eagle in #2. Do you know if this is normal or if the bird has some eye problem?

Thanks Walt, that eagle is perfectly normal, it just shut its eyelid.

Contrary to humans bird lids close sideways, it seems.

Bernd

No kidding? I learn something new every day if I'm not careful.

I'm pretty sure. The lid moves from the beak backwards- I think evolution "designed" it that way to moisten eyes during flight, also perhaps if the bird flies very fast, the lid might "lift off" if the air got underneath...

A couple of shots from the back porch...

I need to do a little cropping on the neighbor's evergreens that are leaving the green tint at the bottom. Maybe about 2AM tomorrow morning!

Excellent shots! That bald eagle is super! And even with FW3- like some people out there wouldn't believe that it would've been possible.

Bernd

Here's one from this weekend. A700 - Sigma 500mm/7.1 APO

High ISO needed because of late afternoon low light and focal length (equivalent to 750mm) and still only 1/125s handheld, viva SSS!

CA/PF removed in photoshop (an issue with highlights with these older, made for film, lenses but easy enough to fix).

1/125s f/7.1 at 500.0mm iso2500
