The autumn colors are starting to appear in central North Carolina. It was overcast, but two days of rain had ended and I couldn't spend another hour indoors. Here are a few of today's shots...

I spent some time today working on my Black Vultures. They are found only in southern US. They are a most demanding subject. Black on black and against a bright sky.

@ TBMike: Looks like a post-processing nightmare! (the process, not the results). I see lots of Turkey Vultures in North Carolona, but never a Black Vulture even though they are said to range this far north. Thanks for the shots!

Very nice picture, Okapi. I think the name in English is Great-crested Grebe. I was just finding out about that bird and its breeding plumage is beautiful.
Here are some pictures from Sunday. 1. Snowy Egret ![]() 2. Juvenile White-crowned Sparrow ![]() 3. Juvenile Peregrine Falcon ![]() 4. Double-crested Cormorant ![]() 5. Luis,
I love the detail in your Anna's Hummingbird, particularly #6. I am trying to sell some old Pentax equipment to fund the purchase of a Sony 70-300mm SSM. The more I see of your 400G+1.4xTC, the more I think... What else do I have to sell? ![]() Cheers... Brian P.S. I found a pair of Bald Eagles this weekend. They were too far away for my 75-300. Your lens would have come in very handy! ![]() Edited by bms44974 - 10 November 2008 at 22:48 |

Nice shots Luis
Brian, indeed it's frustating not having one of those real good G's but they are soooo expensive. I have to make do with my not so fast 400/5.6 and 500/7.2 Sigma's ;-) Here's some with a 500/8 af mirror on A900 1/1250s f/8.0 at 500.0mm iso400 ![]() 1/320s f/8.0 at 500.0mm iso400 ![]() Darren |

Thanks Tim, Brettania, Dumont and Brian.
I love hummingbirds. Last weekend they were quite active in the area. You could hear them singing and moving all over the place. I was looking at the hummer pictures and thinking that how to make them look closer to how I remembered them from this weekend. The sky wasn't so washed out and the colors were a tad more intense. The problem is that the head color was so intense that any global modification would blow out the colors on the head. Then I saw Gil's post at dpreview recommending Nik's Viveza plug-in and decided to give it a try. I must say I'm impressed with the ease with which you can do local modifications of the picture using this tool, without affecting other parts. With a few clicks, I independently controlled the background saturation, the brightness/contrast/etc of the body and the head of the bird without directly resorting to layers, masks or other PS trickery. Here are the modified versions (work in progress): ![]() ![]() Regards, -- Luis |
