Recently processed Bald Eagle shots from Dec. 2007 (my first close up Bald Eagles in flight). Taken from my limited Orlando, Florida birding. Used A700 + Bigma. Cropped, jpg, hand held. Will try to go back next year to try more settings and double the fun.

momech, I have some questions.
- why did you use the APSC mode if you were using FF lenses?
to get closer? you could have just cropped later?
-even then were these photos (especially the 1st one) cropped heavily before posting?

Darren,
I wanted to compare crops in the FF mode with images in the APSC mode, trying to decide which was a better solution for long range shooting. The parula is about a 67% crop, and the frigatebirds 50%. I shot quite a few FF starting at ISO 1600 and working back down to ISO 200. In high contrast situations, when the sun was well up, the darker areas were extremely noisy all the way down to 400. I'm going to try this again but with the contrast dialed down (don't know if this will affect RAW images much), and a range of EV adjustments.
I don't know why yet, but the best results I got for relatively high ISO were with the APSC mode, up to ISO 800. Took a good bit of trial and error in PP.

Thanks for your reply, 50% and 67% is not a lot of crop on the A900 original size but 67% of the APSC mode is quite a lot. The Parula ISO was only 200 according to the exif but it looks like it was higher and perhaps with NR on, also maybe the focus was not spot on for that pic. The contrast setting will not affect the raw files unless you process them to jpg "as shot". Could you post the uncropped photo of the Parula APSC shot as well as a FF shot of the bird if you took one?
