Thank you Bernd,
I guess some of your previous tips helped. We still lack good lighting here up north. To get ss 1/1000 and f5,6 I would have had to go to iso 800. And this was with a clear sky. I stopped at iso 400 and f4,5 even with the 1,4 conv. But with a little luck you can get keepers anyway.

Mika,
last year I was on a holiday in Greece, I didn't do much travel recently, due to family and job, so I kinda forgot about how different the quality of light can be.
What a difference it was - at the sea everything is soooo bright! I think before I pursued photography I never was aware of this.
Anyhow, the point I want to make: the best light, evening and morning, is always not that intense- so even using ISO 800 makes up for that.
Are you struggling handholding that combo?
I 'm using a monopod for some time when I'm out - you loose some flexibility, but it sure keeps your arms relaxed...
best regards,
Bernd

Bernd,
I find it easier to get good shots, with this combo handheld, of moving objects than non moving. If I keep a non moving bird in the viewfinder, waiting for the right moment to shoot, it is easy to start shaking and get a blurry photo. I got my new (and first) tripod last week, so I will start to bring that with me in the future. I was waiting for a specially made adapterplate. It was only available for N*k*n and C*n*n but now there is a Sony version aswell

A great grief of grackles has descended upon my bird feeder, chasing away all the song birds. I figured the best way to get rid of the grackles would be to shoot them.

I like the Grackles (shots) and the pun!
I read that they are "related" to blackbirds, right?
We don't get them in Europe, I think.

Bernd

Thanks. You're right, they're part of the blackbird family, but they're anything but black. When the light is at the right angle you can see all kinds of bright almost metallic looking colors. Unfortunately they arrive in large numbers and bully the smaller birds. They also make a very unpleasant screech. Still, they're fun to shoot.
Regards,
Walt

Most important I almost forgot to mention that your shots are beautiful! The display of colour on the first bird's feathers it spectacular.
best regards,

Thanks Bernd, I appreciate it. For the record, the colors are straight out of the camera. ~Walt
