Took this morning. It's called a Painted Bunting - I wonder why?.
Apparently it flies without actually using it's wings. 500mm. cropped. ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by analytical - 29 April 2007 at 22:09 |

I visited the English school of falconry recently, a great place to take your camera and a great variety of 'raptors'
(raptor = carnivorous birds that hunt and kill other animals) This is a Kestral. Minolta 200APO HS f3.5 iso200 ![]() I really struggled to get any decent photo's during the flying displays, these 'suckers' are fast i.e kestrals, falcons, hawks. I was using a Sony Alpha, I tried AF-C but no way can that keep up. These birds were usually flying from a fixed point to their handler and I think the best way was to pre-focus on a point switch to MF, track the bird to the prefocused point and shoot ! still no great success really. This is one of the slower birds and it's not very sharp. Minolta 200APO HS iso200 f8 ![]() Don't ask me why I have the static bird at f3.5 and the owl at f8 ? Wow; dramatic stuff.
Very abbreviated session today, rained intermittently. Did get a shot of this little night hawk, which I like. ![]() |

Here is a Cooper's Hawk that was outside my front window.
He was looking around for a quick lunch. I had to take the shot through my front double paned insulated window. If I had gone out the door, he would be gone. ![]() 1/400s f/4.5 at 135.0mm iso200 |
