It's bird time in Thailand again. Just getting started now, but the difference when I went out last Sunday was already very pronounced, although after the rains there's a lot of greenery in the way. I tried out my new 70-400. A little slow compared to the 300/4 but very sure.

Parakeet (I cannot find this one in my bird book - anyone recognise it? Could possibly be an import as this is shot near to Bangkok. Eyes don't seem to match any of the Thai parakeets I can find, and neither male nor female have any significant colour on the head except for the yellow/green neck ring being more pronounced on some (the male?). Ring-necked? But none of the group had pink colourations that I could see.

Great thread, as usual. I am still amazed from the Jacanas .

Today I managed to scare all the birds with my lens. They all flew as soon as I pointed at them... Here are few examples:

Sony A700 + Sony 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4xTC | f/4 | 1/320sec | ISO 320

Sony A700 + Sony 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4xTC | f/4 | 1/1000sec | ISO 320

But luckily, my friend the Great Blue Heron is always happy to pose for me...

@ar-wis:

Great shots there.

I think #1 is a young Pygmy Owl. I should know for sure because owls are normally my strong-point, but I'm not totally certain of this one.

#2 is a bee-eater - I think probably the Green Bee-eater.

Where did you find them?

Red head ducks "blast off". Wish I'd had a WA, there were several thousand of them. There were spooked by a pair of northern harriers.

I took this one in Iraq with a Sony DSC-R1 (before I bought my A700).

Thanks Punkskaphil, I found them both in Malawi. The owl in the Liwonde National Park and the bee-eater in some small wildlife reserve in the South of Malawi (forgot the name of that park).
