Not sure I'm really 'showing' a bird here. The silhouette shows the large beak on a grosbeak.

Mid-winter in NZ is a tad tough on the local birdlife so we're in the habit of providing forage. It also means light conditions are low so I get to practice with the tripod because the shutter speeds are really in free fall.
This is of a sequence based on the local tauhou - shots with 300/4 G & Sony 1.4x TC, on my giottos tripod and, umm, geared Manfrotto head. This isn't the ideal tripod head for shooting birds but as I kind of know where the birds are going, it works. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Just popping by to say "hi" to all you wonderful bird photographers!
This is literally a sitting duck, in the reflection pools surrounding the Louvre pyramids, taken with the ZA135 at 3.5. Probably should have stopped down a little further: the beak is more in focus than the eye. Never mind the too harsh light, wasn't out for "ideal photographing". Added a little fill light in light room to soften the harshness. I do like how his mouth is just slightly open, though. ![]() ![]() |

yes, that's a darter (or as it is sometimes known, a snake-bird). |
