Last week I went on a four-day birding trip to Sweden, armed with an A700 and new Sigma 500/4.5. Here are a few shots.

Eurasian Nutcracker

Willow Tit

Great Spotted Woodpecker

Crested Tit

Yellowhammer

Northern Goshawk

Great shots Phil, they certainly deserve a thread of their own! The first one is amazingly sharp and clear!

Thanks for the comments.

@aditya: It's really good for birding. I'd been using the Sigma 300/2.8 for the past four years, and this handles very similarly, and I can happily use it wide open (which I very rarely did with the 300mm). It's obviously larger and a bit heavier, but not hugely so (I can even hand-hold it sometimes, but not for long). Of course I nearly always shoot on a tripod.

My only gripe is that it would really benefit from a focus limiter. Photographing such small birds means I often just miss with the AF and then it hunts to the background, so I often switch to manual focus and try to preset to a specific branch. Most of the photos above were taken at designated feeding stations, so there was a lot of action going on and lots of opportunities to try different compositions and settings.

I'm really looking forward to using it on the A77 (I've been waiting for a replacement for my faulty A77 since early November).

A Welcome Swallow (500mm hand held) - I really like the bokeh in this shot.
