Been to CCB, an offshorebase near Bergen.

1: This is the West Venture, a drillingrig that is also classified as a ship. It does not anchor up when working offshore, but stays in place using a dynamic positioning system. It sailed to shore by itself, and will stay for a week and equip for the next work.

2: Strilborg, quayside at CCB.

3: Siem Pearl, large AH-vessel quayside at CCB and the crew washing her down for crewchange.

Got this little set of a minesweeper called KNM Mllry, taken today just east of Fedje island.

The thing with these type of minesweepers is that while they are capable of high speeds, they have to maintain airpressure underneath to do so. They work a little like a hovercraft, and are mostly constructed of composite material and aluminum to be as light as possible. So whenever they hit rough sea, they lose the aircushion they need and i guess things are not so comfortable

Some ships have a clearly-marked area "Rescue Zone"... can you explain its significance?

It has to do with the ships class. When classified as rescue-vessel or stand-by vessel the ship has to be marked with a rescue-zone on the side. This will be the best place to pick up people from the sea during a rescue-operation and has various equipment like nets to climb up, ladders etc. To get a ship classified like this it also needs to fulfill a long list of requirements, like certified personell, mob-boat, space, hospital etc.

When doing duty as standby-vessel for an oilrig, one is the first in line to help if something should go wrong.

A lot of the ships in the offshore industry here in Norway has this class, being able to do multiple tasks is a good thing in slow times.

Hope this was a little informative

Thanks for that. I had thought that perhaps people from ships marked in that manner should be rescued from that point -- the reverse of what is the actual meaning.

A couple of cruise ships visited Lyttelton port of Christchurch NZ last week so a good excuse to put the boat in the water & bring out the a900, 24 & 100mm lenses.

1. Nautica pulling past Sun Princess leaving port. 24mm

2. Nautica heading out to sea, fog ahead. 100mm

3. Pilot boat 100mm

4. Sun Princess 24mm

Very enjoyable evening on the harbour, warm weather, good company, nice wine... a900 & lenses
A camera and lens for every occasion!

Far Star; I have ventured into the realm of gimp and tried to fix this up a bit as i thought that the pink circle around the sun in the original was disturbing. Original is here, what do you think? Does it look unnatural?
