Oh, a thread for me :)
I was also thinking of 14GM vs 12-24 so good to know the f4 version is not top tier glass. I was also wondering about a setup of 14GM + 20G vs 12-24/2.8 20G is supposed to be very good, 14GM as well but only if you get a good copy which is a bit of hit and miss. Decisions, decisions... |

I don't know what's classed as "top-tier" but 12-24mm f4 is one of the best UWA lenses i have owned. It's excellent throughout the zoom range at f4.
I also owned 14mm f1.8 until recently. I had 3 copies of this lens and they all performed roughly the same. So not sure why you feel there is a lot of sample variation. I had to return the first two copies since they had dust behind the rear lens element. I almost never shoot as wide as 12mm. 15-16mm is as wide as I generally need/want and for anything wider I'm happy to stitch. Personally I have decided to go with 20-70mm which covers a fair amount of my UWA needs. Looking to try the viltrox 16mm f1.8 when I can get hold of one. |

I also never heard of big sample variations with the Sony 14GM. I found one person on FredMiranda stating "Mine is never sharp corner to corner, not even at F8. Must be copy variation then." but seeing basically everybody else saying " this lens surpassed my expectations. It is sharp edge to edge even wide open." I feel it is a faulty lens, not sample variation. |

Hmmm.... Not really a fair comparison I think. Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 - bought two copies, returned both due to decentering. The centers were certainly bitingly sharp. But it's larger and heavier with a smaller zoom range. Personally to some extent I rather just get 14GM and crop with a high res body. 14-24mm like 17-28mm isn't zoomy enough Sony 12-24mm f2.8 - heavier, bigger and twice the price. I'd expect it to perform better than a less expensive f4 zoom. I don't think there is a better equivalent lens to Sony 12-24mm. Nikon have a 14-30mm f4 which is really nice range. But it isn't anywhere near as sharp as Sony in the corners especially at f4. Most Sony lenses these days are either best in class or at least equivalent to other options. Pretty much the only reason I'm still shooting with Sony. Edited by nandbytes - 19 August 2023 at 12:46 |

Since Sony started with the GM branding i haven't really noticed much complaints about copy variation. Having changed many many lenses over years, all my Sony "post-GM" lenses have been within acceptable limits. In comparison, in the same time frame I have received one decentred tamron lens, 2 decentred sigma lenses (though both were 14-24mm) and 4 decentred samyang lenses. Very anecdotal but people can make of it what they will.... |

Okay, I've made my decision.
I wanted wide, I got wide, I wanted fast, I got fast. But not in one piece ;) Sony 12-24/4.0 G Viltrox 16/1.8 Both used, for the total price of a new GM 14/1.8 |

Welcome to the Viltrox 16mm world. This gem continues to surprise me of how sharp/good it is for $500. |

I don't remember where I was hearing about copy variation of the 14 GM, but what you say here is encouraging :)
Still doesn't make me closer to my choice. 20G + 14GM? Or maybe 12-24 (which version...) and 20 to have the ability to use filters in UWA? Or maybe just one of the zooms. One day I will wake up and will know what to do :) I already had 16-35 for A mount and there were often times when I wanted to go wider but couldn't. It is hard for me to say how wide, I have no experience with anything wider than 16mm. edit: I started googling that Viltrox. Interesting proposition... even more choices now ;) Edited by Mestari - 28 August 2023 at 13:39 |

I know this thread is long not active, but I have come across that place where I heard about sample variation of 14GM:

I have the Sony GM 14 f1.8 and 24mm f1.4 and used them for quite some time but recently started using 11-24mm f4 + Metabones T Smart EF Adapter with a7IV and a7RII. Not so nice or easy on the a7RII, but perfect with Sony a7IV.

The new Canon RF is 10-20mm f4 (Not 10-24mm) but it has stabilization, something that the 11-24mm I own does not have. I just hope it has the same minimal distortion as my lens. The Sony GM 12-24mm is a beauty and cost the same but has more distortion.

And I have still not made any decision on wide angle myself...
Too many choices. In the meantime 16-35 mk2 has been announced. By the time I make up my mind there will be even more choices |
