I own a G1 70-400G purchased new soon after release - it is very sharp at 400mm.

Grabbed some shots to show ... If IBIS isn't turned on and I fail to hold real still, or I'm not otherwise stabilized, fuzzy pictures can result!

Enjoy ...

The Sony was great when it focused accurately, but at the longer end of the zoom range it seemed to do that only on rare occasions.
Sounds like there was something wrong with your 70-400G. With the A900 I felt it had more contrast then resolution at 400mm near infinity (but with the A99m2 it was much better). If you're better off cropping 2x it seems to me there was something wrong with your 70-400G.

@Matthew: looks like my experience with this lens.
