So, I have a Sony A58 & have been using a Tokina AT-X Pro, 28-70 2.8 with it. I have been struggling with photos looking a bit off on sharpness which is odd for that lens as well as the A58 itself. I did a focus test using a calibration grid & it seems to be focusing just past the actual subject leaving me VERY slightly out of focus when I'm below F7. Is there any way to make an adjustment? I have searched the forums & can't seem to find an answer anywhere.
Apologies if I'm repeating a topic! |

Welcome to the forum .
For micro focus adjustment you need an a68 , a77ii , a900 , a850 , a99 or a99ii . For the a58 , your out of luck , manual focus or another lens is your only option if it misses focus . Or stop the lens down more , but that's not likely what you got an f/2.8 for . |

... or an A7 of some kind + LA-EA4.
I'm afraid for critical focus on the A58 you need to use MF. But the focus peaking works very well. I use yellow and set it low for sharp lenses, medium for softer lenses. Other ways are (1) to set AF-S and step back slightly after locking focus, or (2) switch to MF after locking AF, using either the lens switch (for SAM/SSM/HSM lenses) or the switch on the camera (for screw-drive lenses), and turn the focus ring with peaking. There is unfortunately no DMF mode on the A58. For portraits where you have plenty of time to press buttons ![]() If you have any more detailed questions you can ask them here or PM me. I still have an A58 and also Gary Friedman's excellent book for the bits I've forgotten. ![]() The A58 does miss out on a lot of modern clever stuff, but you can still nail focus with it if you take the trouble. Oh, I found that you can take a dozen shots in AF and get a range of actual focussing positions, and some are usuauly sharp. You can't judge misfocus in one image. I believe all the E-mount cameras (except the Alpha 1) offer focus adjustments with the LA-EA2 & LA-EA4. The A3000 is somewhat like the A58. It has the same sensor and a similar looking body, though not as nice.

Wow, thank you all for the input. At this point I'm sticking with my A58, it does a good enough job for my needs. I'm keeping my eyes open for an A68 with a reasonable shutter count & price. I'm retired & don't want to sink a whole lot of money in to this. I'm an old Minolta guy from the days of film & commercial labs. I selected Sony because I could use a lot of my older lenses.
Love the "step back slightly" solution. Such a simple concept that never occurred to me, it's genius! (meant sincerely). I've played with the focus peaking on white & didn't love it, yellow makes HUGE difference. Also used it to check the focus deviation & it confirmed the problem. No big surprise because I'll run 200-500 shots on a shoot & find myself often sifting for an images with sharp detail. Again, thank you all for the input! |
