As some may be aware via my recent post on the Dogs thread, I'm a newly minted owner of an a7iv camera.
Having purchased a SEL200600 G OSS lens at the Boxing Day Sales including Sony Australia cashback, I was looking for a mirrorless body to use with it. Because I'm keeping my a99ii, a77ii and quality a-mount glass, I was wanting a body that would work fully functionally with my lenses via the LA-EA5. That reduced to a short-list of three - the a7Riv, the a1 and the a7iv. With the possibility of a future release of an a9iii if that ever happens despite the chip shortage??? The a7Riv has been offered here at a red hot discount via cashback since late last year, but I was daunted by the huge sensor and file sizes, and felt it was a bit short of the AF and tracking performance of the a1 and a9. The a1 is Sony's hero camera with latest specs and tech, blazingly fast and feature laden, but I felt I wouldn't be using all it offers, and was rather put off by the eye watering price. After reading and watching reviews, guides and opinion pieces about the a1 as well as the a7iv cameras, including this excellent and comprehensive one posted by our local guru Mark Galer, I purchased a new a7iv. I know it doesn't have the industrial strength specifications and performance of the a1, but for my purposes it certainly ticks every box for what seems to be excellent value for money. It incorporates many of the latest innovations and features 'trickled down' from the a1, the a9, the A7R and a7S cameras, and will accurately track and focus anything I can think I'll be wanting to shoot. Early days, and I've got lots to learn particularly from the comprehensive 560 page e-book I downloaded as a subscribed member of Mark Galer's Patreon subscription group, but thought this preliminary post may be of interest. I'll happily add as I learn more. |

Congrats. I will probably pick one up eventually. Better AF sounds like a good trade for a little resolution

@Jozioau
Thanks for that. I must admit I'm also very taken by the stats on the a7iv. It looks like it will be an excellent wildlife stills camera, as well as a very recent video camera as well. The 33MP is roughly enough for a lot of my landscape aspirations, but I see it more as a complement. It's tempting with all the positive reviews. As you note, the price-point for what it delivers (and yes, I too would like an A1 even more but there's no rational way for me to justify the expense). |

Thanks Joe, it looks like Sony brought an interesting camera to the market that might attract quite some users, who can not (or don't want to) spend the money on the A1, or fill their hard disk with the A7RIV file size.

Congratulations, Joe! It sure seems like it's going to be a great camera and a very good choice!
I do like Mark Galer's reviews and tutorials. I put more value on his reviews than many others. I also like Dustin Abott's reviews. As for other reviews: One observation I've made reading and watching reviews: most of them are written or filmed by content creators, YouTubers, Cinematographers and they have a strong bias to the camera's video capabilities -- naturally things that will be most useful for their craft and not necessarily that of still photographers. Maybe we are becoming a minority? I think people need to pay close attention to the criteria of the reviews. I think some buyers are swayed by these reviews into buying products that might not suit their needs. I know that I will seldom shoot video, so all that improved video performance is wasted on me. I personally would rather not have to pay for it. Also, I don't like flippy screens! But reading some of the customer reviews @ B&H Photo, it seems many people are mainly praising the video performance and flip screen so I suppose that may actually be what many customers want. I'm looking forward to seeing photographs from your new camera, Joe! Regards, Kelly |

I also purchased an A7 IV with the LE-EA5 adapter to use with my old A mount lenses. It works very well.
In fact my old Sony 500mm mirror lens works better on the Ay IV than on my A77. While still limited to the centre spot for focusing in the A7 it's a larger square compared to the single spot on the A77. Even bird eye-af works and it will track birds in flight which I find amazing and was not something I had much success with at all with the A77. |

Congrats overall I love its just a bit slow with lossless RAW for me other than that nothing much wrong with it. it's just 1 issue that I've been complaining about in all Sony bodies why the H0ll no time-lapse. I know about the interval shooting BTW

That's really encouraging. Does this mean the shutter blackout isn't that much of a problem? I've not found the a7riii to be all that good for BIF (and rightly, I didn't expect it to be). If the a7iv is a big improvement and it adds more video tools, then it starts to be even more tempting ![]() |

The EVF does blackout between frames just like an old dslr with flappy mirror! It doesn't brother me though. The fact it tracks anything at all with the screw drive 500mm mirror surprised me. |

Thanks @Dune
The tracking sounds really impressive. I guess the shutter blackout is of much shorter duration than for the older a7Riii if it doesn't bother you. |

I'm curious what A mount glass you have that you're using with it and what you think? Any of the old Minolta screw-driven lenses? I keep contemplating upgrading my a7iii to an a7iv at some point so I can make use of some of the older glass.
Partially because if I did that, I could potentially get something like the Minolta 300mm f/2.8 for a steal and use it. But I shoot dogs, and I shoot a lot of action. So I'm just not sure. I know the LA-EA4 and the a7iii was a terrible combo. |

The screw drive lenses I have are the 500mm mirror and Minolta 100-200mm F4.5 zoom. They both work as well as or better in the case of the 500mm as they did on my A77.
I also have a couple of A mount lenses with motors in them, 70-300G and a Sigma 105mm macro. Both also work well with it but of course I could have used a different adapter with those. |
