Thank you! That's good to know! It's definitely something I'm contemplating down the line. |

If anyone's interested, I've posted some photos of senior men's tennis in the Sports Pics thread, all taken with my a7iv this time mounted with my SAL70200G2 via the LA-EA5.
Worked seamlessly and fully functionally. Over the coming period it is my intention to get out with this camera and all my a-mount lenses via the LA-EA5, and will post selected images in appropriate threads, with links to them added here. I'm sure it's all going to be a pretty happy marriage. |

Thanks for those pics Joe. What was the AF setting you used for those? It looks like combining the a7iv with an LA-EA5 adapter is a very effective combination.

The a7iv was set to human eye autofocus, the general autofocus setting was AF-C, AF tracking sensitivity at 2, the shutter to Continous Shooting Mid, and the shutter speed to 1/2500 second. The lens was set to f2.8. Still very early days, but can't complain about the kit in any way. |

Thank you, Joe!
The photos look great! I'm wondering what the difference is between the LA-EA3 and LA-EA5 when used with SSM lenses. I understand the LA-EA5 is not compatible with my A7III. The LA-EA3 seems to work fine with My SAL 70-200 SSM G (original). Mind you, normally the fastest moving objects I photograph are trains. So I wonder if I were to upgrade to the A7iv or other newer camera, will I need the LA-EA5 for SSM lenses? Regards, Kelly |

The LA-EA5 is basically just an LA-EA3 that supports screw-drive on recent cameras. It works just like the LA-EA3 on older cameras. There is a firmware update for the LA-EA3 that is required to support the same frame rates as the LA-EA5, but that was released back during the A9 launch. There is no performance benefit of an LA-EA5 over an updated LA-EA3.

I get the feeling there was a change in the hardware for recent cameras, which is why you need LA-EA5 on the recent ones and LA-EA1/2/3/4 on the older ones, but I'm still not clear whether the LA-EA5 works on early A7 models the same way the LA-3 does.

I don't have an older A7 right now, but I have a NEX 5T, and the LA-EA5 works just like the LA-EA3 (and updated LA-EA1) on it--right down to having contrast-detect AF-S in movie mode when you press the shutter--the most recent Sony bodies no longer have any contrast-detect with the LA-EA1/3/5 adapters. Another set of even more recent cameras dropped all AF support for the LA-EA2 and LA-EA4 adapters, but those cameras still support all the non-AF stuff with those adapters. They didn't just drop all support for those adapters. Summary: NEX to A5100/A6000/A7/A7R/A7S/A7SII/A7II(original firmware) - LA-EA1 requires firmware update for AF - Contrast-detect/video AF-S LA-EA1/3/5 with motorized lenses - LA-EA2/4 AF - All LA-EA adapters limited to LO frame rate AF-C A6300/A6500/A7II(updated)/A7RII/A7III/A7RIII - Phase-detect LA-EA1/3/5 with motorized lenses - Contrast detect AF/video AF-S with LA-EA1/3/5 with motorized lenses - LA-EA2/4 AF - All LA-EA adapters limited to LO frame rate AF-C - Still no AF with original firmware LA-EA1 A9/A9II - LA-EA3 updated to support 8/10 FPS AF-C with motorized lenses - LA-EA5 supports 8/10 FPS AF-C with motorized lenses (no screw-drive AF) - LA-EA1/2/4 and original firmware LA-EA3 limited to LO frame rate AF-C - A9 has contrast-detect/video AF-S with LA-EA1/3/5, A9II does not - Still no AF with original firmware LA-EA1 A6100/A6400/ZV-E10/A7C - Phase-detect LA-EA1/3/5 with motorized lenses - No LA-EA1/3/5 contrast detect/video AF-S - LA-EA2/4 AF - All LA-EA adapters limited to LO frame rate AF-C - Still no AF with original firmware LA-EA1 A6600/A7RIV - LA-EA4 and LA-EA5 both support screw-drive AF - No LA-EA1/3/5 contrast detect/video AF-S - Updated LA-EA3 and LA-EA5 support 11/10 FPS HI+ frame rate AF-C - LA-EA1/2/4 and original firmware LA-EA3 limited to LO frame rate AF-C - Still no AF with original firmware LA-EA1 A7SIII/FX3 - LA-EA1/3/5 phase-detect with motorized lenses - LO frame rate AF-C - No LA-EA1/3/5 contrast detect/video AF-S - No LA-EA2/4 AF support - No LA-EA5 screw-drive AF - Still no AF with original firmware LA-EA1 A1/A7IV - LA-EA5 screw-drive AF - updated LA-EA3 and LA-EA5 support up to 10 FPS AF-C - updated LA-EA1 still limited to LO frame rate AF-C - No LA-EA1/3/5 contrast detect/video AF-S - No LA-EA2/4 AF support - still no AF with original firmware LA-EA1 All full-frame E-mount cameras support A-mount Lens Compensation including DT lenses. I am still flabergasted that the LA-EA4 does not work with the A1/A7iv

Interesting. Though the LA-EA4 kind of sucks and the LA-EA5 is way better so I'm not sure why anyone would want to use it with them! |

The LA-EA4 has 3 cross-type AF sensors and does a better job detecting out-of-focus detail in challenging light. I haven't bought another LA-EA4 for my A7RIV after selling my modified one, but I have thought about it. The LA-EA5 mostly works pretty well. The LA-EA4 would be more compelling with HI frame rate AF-C burst tracking support.

I vote for you. It is a disappointing specification for those who already have LA-EA4. However, LA-EA5 brings out the modern AF performance of the latest body. Maybe future progress too. The LA-EA4 pushes AF back to the old standards it was designed for, no matter how good the new body is. Without the LA-EA5, I would have been dissatisfied with the AF performance and sold off all the A-Mount lenses. But thankfully there is LA-EA5! |

I'm thankful there's the 5. I just wish they'd make the a7iii compatible with it for the old screw-driven lenses. I tried the LA-EA4 with it and it was terrible. Completely not worth it.
