At 24, 40, and 50mm https://www.dpreview.com/news/0316804924/sony-announces-compact-24mm-40mm-and-50mm-full-frame-primes
These are all G primes - 24/F2.8, 40/F2.5, and 50/F2.5 "each lens has a physical aperture ring, which can be clicked or de-clicked, a linear-response manual focus ring, an AF/MF switch, and a customizable focus hold button. The filter diameter for all three is 49mm. Sony claims that these metal-clad (aluminum) lenses are weather and dust-resistant, and each lens comes with a rubber gasket seal around the lens mount. Accompanying lens hoods are included, with the 40mm and 50mm hoods containing their own 49mm front threads for attachment of filters." Coming in May at $599 and £629 according to Wex. |

I just spent the morning watching every review available so far on these new lenses. All are impressive, and tempting. However, it helped me make up my mind. I just placed my order for the Tamron 35mm 2.8, currently on sale for $199.
At 1/3 the price of the new 40mm 2.5 from Sony, affordability wins over size, 1/3 stop, and faster focus with Sony's linear motor. The much close focus of the Tamron was the other big plus, and probably the final check for my decision. All that being said, I think the new lenses are very impressive, perhaps there will be a 50mm 2.5 for me at some point in the future. |

Hmmm, nice looking but too pricey for me. I'd be more likely to go for the Tamron 35mm 1:2 as well, but it's more expensive here (pity they don't do the 45mm 1:2 in FE mount).
Also, nice to see f2.5 coming back into fashion. Tamron did a range of these in adaptall days. ![]() Edited by Miranda F - 23 March 2021 at 15:58 |

Not sure I can call it "working", but yeah....
Also, I still have the Tamron 2.5/24mm and sent the 2.5/28mm to my daughter to use on the NEX6 I passed onto her. Can't recall, what were the other 2.5? |

The Tamron 35mm F2.8 is a very good lens. It doesn't seem like these are quite as good optically.
I guess the aperture ring is supposed to make up for the lack of a front dial on the A7C. I prefer more body controls and less clutter on the lens. |

I love these lenses too..but honestly, I believe they are too pricey.
I have no doubts on theirquality but they seem to have the same price as the f1.8 lineup. Moreover, they have same competition from third party producers, would they be worth the extra? Let's see the real street market waiting some months. |

Me too! The other was the original 1:2 90mm macro. Classic all-moving double-Gauss design in adaptall with a dedicated extension tube you could swap for a 2x TC. great lens of its time, before they all changed to telephoto designs. The more recent f2.8 A-mount is basically a 50mm macro with a matched 2x Tc on the back, which halves the throw needed for 1:1. Edited by Miranda F - 23 March 2021 at 18:33 |

I am a bit disappointed in the distortion of the 24mm. Maybe I should look at the Sigma 24/3.5.

Remember the Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8 is about $800 This lenses are very similar, been the new ones a little bit bigger and heavier. I'm planning on getting the 24mm |

I think they are priced right. They are comparable to the Sigma's. If you want cheaper, look at the Tamrons or the Sony 50/1.8. (Just a thought, is that a Tamron designed lens? As Tamron did not bring out a 50mm lens yet)

The longitudinal (and bokeh highlight) ca seems a bit high but goes away about a stop down..of course so does part of the bokeh.
Else I think the 24 in particular is intriguing as a trekking landscape lens, it should work in mini hand type tripods. I love the Tamron 28-75 (first general range FE zoom I've had) so the rest are uninteresting to me, and the 24 only if I never get back my Voigt 21 3,5 from repair. |

I just got the FE 20mm f1/8 G. I had been considering the 24mm f/2.8 G but the 20mm G was used, in like new condition, for only $80 more than these new lenses. I may pickup the FE 40mm f/2.5 G once we see more reviews after release. The 40mm would pair nicely with the 20mm and 85mm f/1.8 I have for how I like to shoot. If we could get a future 135mm f/2.5 or 2.8 I be very happy.

Old thread but I bought the 50mm f/2.5G used at a good discount. I needed a fast focusing 50mm for studio work with toddlers. The FE 50mm f/1.8 wasn't cutting it and the Zeiss 55mm is overpriced even used. The Sigma f/1.4 is way to big and heavy. I considered the Samyang/Rokinon 45mm f/1.8 but by the time I added a dock to do updates (which many reviewers reported were needed to solve AF problems) I was less than $100 from this lens. The Samyang/Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 is reported to have terrible AF and for this use, I need fast AF.
So I dove in the deep end. This lens has quickly become one of my favorites. Fantastic IQ on the A7Riii, extremely fast AF (fastest of any lens I've tried) and super small and light. It is smaller and than the Tamron 35mm f/2.8 and matches it or surpasses it for IQ. Definitely a keeper. |
