Can anyone tell me why, at times, with the above camera when I press on the shutter the scene will be bright and then quickly revert to a darker scene?

The photo (RAW and/or JPG) itself is correct and not too dark or too light?
Harm, with A7iv+A7iii plus 6-400mm glass.

Not really, I can only guess. I have noticed it on some E-mount lenses including Sony and Samyang. E-mount lenses have a software-controlled iris instead of the mechanical lever on A-mount. I suspect that sometimes the micro has gone to sleep and when it wakes up it goes through some kind of 'check the ends to find where I am' process. If you repeat pressing the shutter to check you're not inventing the observation, it doesn't do it!

Try it on AF-C and see if that makes a difference. AF is also faster than in AF-S on the A7 range because the camera doesn't use OSPDAF in AF-S mode, so possibly the continuous comms chatter will stop it going to sleep.
Miranda F & Sensorex, Sony A7Rii, A58, Nex-6, Dynax 4, 5, 60, 500si/600si/700si/800si, various Sony & Minolta lenses, several Tamrons, lots of MF primes and *far* too many old film cameras ...

I've noticed this as well, not only that lens but also other lenses. I've assumed it quickly opens the aperture to aid AF, but that's pure speculation. Maybe you can test it if it still happens when the lens is set to full open. When it happens my photo still comes out as intended (exposure wise).

I think I noticed it doesn't happen with Manual Focus, neither with a MF lens or with an AF lens set at MF.

I think it has to do with this but somebody help me if I am all wrong. As follows:


When you use a lens that has an aperture controlled by the camera, it actually keeps that aperture wide open letting in lots of light while you focus and only snaps closed to the shutter you have set when you press the shutter.

I have tested things and it does seem to happen when I don’t select the aperture.

If I use one of the scene modes (which I never do) it does happen but not in manual or aperture priority.

I think what you're describing is A-mount. The lens there is always full open and only quickly snaps to the set aperture when you take the photo.

I just tested and with E-mount (and AF-S) the lens is at the set aperture when composing, then when you half press the shutter the lens opens fully, sets the focus and then closes down again to take the photo.
