It looks Sony will release a 28/1.8G shortly. I was waiting for that one.
I never grew attached to the common 28/2 even if it is fine lens, I feel it has to many compromises. I do not like 24mm, it to me is a useless focallength, not wide enough but with the disadvantages of a wide angle. 28mm is the ultimate wide-normal lens. I was hoping for an f/1.4 and because of the 28/2 I thought there was a good chance - but alas. Curious about the price. It would be a nice addition to my 20/1.8G, 55/1.8CZ and 85G. Just waiting for the 200/2.8G after this ![]() |

If you have an A7RIV just crop a little from the 24/1.4
![]() You'll still have slightly shallower DoF than f1.8 ![]() |

I am interested. I like the 1.8/20 G, and don't love the 2/28 though it generally seems to work fine. I am also interested in the Samyang 24 F1.8. So many options!

Without kidding, I do not understand the rise of 24mm. Probably because most phones have a focallength between 24 and 28mm. But I would prefer a 28-85/2.8 normal lens over a 24-70/2.8 one. But it seems I am in a minority. Also, I hope the lens is less money then the 24/1.4GM |

28mm is the one I can easily live without, give me 24mm any day.

It seems a lot of us are waiting for a 200mm f2.8.

you could but your DoF will be deeper. I am assuming you are wanting f1.8 lenses for the f1.8 rather than for f2.8 (in which case the current 28mm f2 would be plenty good). And you could crop to 55 and 85mm but you may like having a few more megapixels ![]() but yes you are in the minority. I like 24mm but I can live without it. I swapped my 24-105mm for the 28-200mm. Definitely miss the 24mm on occasions but its not end of the world. considering its a G lens (as supposed to GM) and a f1.8 it'll be cheaper.
you can make a similar argument against any focal length tbh. I feel the same way about 50mm for example yet its one of the most popular focal lengths(??) Similarly I think 24mm is more popular than 28mm in general. Its a focal length I quite like too. |

It is really hard to argue against anything you say, Anand.
I wanted and expected a f/1.4 as the DoF difference between that and the f/2 is more significant. But I can live with f/1.8. The biggest problem with the 28/2 is that it is so uninspiring. It is good for what it is, a cheap lens, but then..... I feel 35mm is the most popular focallength, but again, I usually prefer 28mm. But 35mm surely has its place. I feel 35mm lenses should be small as it is a run-and-gun focallength. But I keep on saying YMMV ![]() |

I think I'm interested in a 28mm. Not compulsively so, but I used to use the old Minolta 28/2 on my cameras and found it useful. It bridged the gap between the 20/2.8 and the 35s. The 24mm never really did. Now with a 21 and 35 Loxia, the same gap exists in my E-mount. Likewise, the shots I've seen of the Sony 28/2 FE lens just haven't gripped me. |

A prime lens longer than 135mm would be nice. 200 would hit a sweet spot. |

![]() Ok, I agree there is quite a gap between 135 mm and those expensive supertelephotos. |
