A bit funny that this lens was announced during the 35mm prime week (for me at least). Someone jokingly said that this might be a silver version of the E 35 F1.8 OSS. I might have been more likely to buy one of those. I am fine with my adapted Tamron SP 35 F1.8 USD on my A7II. The FE MTF looks like it may be worse optically. I am sure it will be a nice quiet, fast focusing lens.

It is a bit less expensive than list prices of the Sony/Zeiss FE 35's, the Sigma 35 F1.4 Art, or the Samyang AF FE 35 F1.4, but it will have to compete with sales and used copies of all of those. And Yongnuo showed a couple of E-mount 35mm's: an FE 35/2 and an E 35/1.8, but those haven't shown up yet.

While still a relatively small lens it is bigger and heavier than the FE 28/2. I hope that promises a good optical performance, like Sony have already shown to be possible with the 55/1.8 and 85/1.8 at a reasonable price point.

And the fact it's still a lot lighter than many 1.4 versions (Sony/Samyang/Sigma) will be a good tradeoff for some vs. the 2/3 stop slower.

Maybe Tamron could bring out a FE version of their 35/1.8, but even the DSLR version is already 50% heavier than this new Sony lens.

Plenty of choices, but for the time being I will stick to my Samyang 35/2.8 and patiently await some real life experiences to see if it's really worthwhile to upgrade.

Very welcome addition : ) Optically I'm fine with the Canon EF 35/2 IS USM but it does not af to the sides or in weak light and it isn't really silent when doing so...still, almost the same mfd and reproduction ratio and fit&finish-wise I preffered it to the FE 28/2. Will be interesting to see reviews.

Thanks for the heads up! 700 Euro? Seems a bit high compared with the 85mm f1.8. I'm guessing the Performance must be quite good. Close focus seems good.
I won't be in any hurry to buy one as I already have the Zeiss 40mm f2.0 Batis, which I love. I also would prefer to wait for tests and reviews of this new lens that prove the performance is top notch. I can tell you that the Batis is outstanding. But the Zeiss lenses render differently that the Sony lenses. The color out of the camera is different as well -- a little more in the blue direction. Of course one can adjust color in post. My Sony FE 85mm f1.8 seems very sharp and am very pleased with it. Especially outstanding for the price! Hopefully this new 35mm is at least as good as the 85mm.

There is an expectation that Sony will release a also release a camerabody and an APS-C body next week. There is a huge gap in the Sony line-up IMHO and that is a good quality travel APS-C zoom. Something similar to the 55-300 in A-mount. Will Sony suprise us with that one? That would be sweet

The 35/1.8 is not a surprise. I still do not see the need for one, but the people wanted one. I am a bit surprised by the focus hold button, but then, the 85/1.8 also has it. It is also a little bit more expensive then I expected, as the Canon RF is $499 - but the Nikon is more expensive.

It is listed as 699,- over at CameraNu.nl.
