Maybe a prelude to the final abandonment of a-mount cameras, in order to prevent too much noise when it happens? Or is that too pessimistic?

I still think there may be a market for the monster ea4r because it will offer ability to use screw-drive lenses with bodies other than the a6600 and a7RIV. Only if Sony indicates that the ea5 might work with earlier bodies with future firmware updates will interest in the 4r collapse.

I am not seeing an advantage the LA-EA5 has over the LA-EA3 for my A7III currently. If it supported screw-drive and/or 10 FPS AF-C bursts, sure. I am not fond of the tripod foot on the LA-EA3, but it is not much of an issue.

Sony a6400
Sony a6600 (up to 11 fps)
Sony a9 (up to 10 fps)
Sony a9 II (up to 10 fps)
Sony a7S III

That's for motorized lenses.

Sony's video indicates that screw drive lenses are supported only with the A7RIV and A6600.

That's odd .
So they've made an adapter that won't even work with SSM lenses on earlier cameras , all the NEX one's etc ?

And it'll only AF screw drive lenses on 2 cameras ?

I think we need to wait for more details , the "compatibility" chart wasn't available when I checked .
I think something might have been lost in translation here .

EDIT; maybe they've rushed it out due to the monster adapter stealing the thunder , and will add firmware updates for cameras with PDAF on the sensors at a later date .
Maybe they were originally planning on announcing it when the new full frame cameras are (apparently) going to be announced/released later in the month ?

They finally did it! I never gave up hope, despite all those who said it would never happen or is impossible.

Yeah I said it was very much nigh impossible. Happy to be proved wrong! One adapter for all A-mount lenses...although not all E-mount cameras, hah, not my A7rii. I lament not though.

Wonder whether that shutter lag that exists in both the LA-EA3 and 4 will be present in the 5?

Edit. And yeah, makes fiscal sense I suppose to make it only compatible with screw drive A-mount lenses when mounted on the latest A7r- and A6- cameras.

This will bring it back to life!

I'm also regretting all the A mount things I've sold or the lenses I've passed on because they seemed a little pricey.

Going to look for a Minolta 100mm f2 and 500mm f8 now.

The 500 AF reflex is clearly another lens that we'll reborn. Patrick Murphy seems to indicate that as the range for AF on E mount is larger than on A-mount, it would be possible to use that lens with multiple AF spot on E mount body supported (A9ii, A7R4)... That would be dope.

Pathetic.

Only two cameras that support screw mount lenses ?
Woefully inadequate.

The rest could be done with firmware and the LA-EA3

OTOH according to Brian Smith compatibility chart we can't find a single Minolta lens namely listed
Patrick Murphy didn't try any Minolta lens neither Gustav Kiburg

One can imagine that Sony will try to deliver fw updates for the previous bodies.

The LAEA5 is compatible on those bodies the same way as an LAEA3 at the moment so there is no need for perfect redundancy here.

I suspect the capabilities of Canon's adapters had something to do with Sony finally developing this one.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

Or a prelude to a99/77 mkIII cams without an SLT. Or is that too optimistic?

I hope not. It should not require much R&D
