I use the LA-EA5 on a7riv and I am more than happy with its performance. Recently I used it with Minolta 85/1.4, Minolta 100/2 and Sony CZ 135/1.8, so all screw drive lenses, and it was a great pleasure to work with them again!
I can't compare it with the A99 because I sold it. If the performance is less good, so be it. I count my blessings.

I use the A7r4 and La EA 5 adapter, and the A99 II. I use both with Sony SSM lenses and Minolta screw drive lenses, including my old 600/4 APO and 300/2.8 APO. There is little, if any difference in the AF overall. The A99 II is better at tracking than the A7R4; but I suspect the A9 + LAEA5 would be better for birds yet.
AS others have mentioned, you don't need to use the micro adjust for your AF, and you've got more options to control the AF, all of which are good. For anything except subjects like wildlife or sports, I can't see any real problem with using A mount lenses. Can't use TCs with the adapter, either.
It's the lenses themselves that provide the improvement - my old 600/4 was built before 1986, there's no way it's going to track like the new E mount 600/4. But give me a perched bird and enough light to stop down a bit and I'll get an image just as nice as with the $13000 E mount lens.
For all else, I just don't see enough difference between my A mount CZ lenses and the new Sony GM lenses to make me want to part with thousands of dollars to replace my entire lineup. When things start breaking down and needing expensive repairs I'll reconsider.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

I have the LA-EA5 adapter on a A7R4 - seems to work with my a-mount lenses pretty well. But I have a problem with the 70-400 ssm2 - it will work fine and then go into the "lens not supported" mode in the middle of taking pictures and shifts to manual focus. It will not go back to auto focus unless I turn off the camera. Basically it isn't trustworthy for that lens. I have to check it to see if it is auto or if auto is disabled. A problem with quick wildlife pictures.
Anyone else have this problem? Lens is in great shape and works fine on my 99ii. I do like the 99ii better but it might be because I'm not used to the A7.

My LA-EA5 arrived yesterday. I tried it with the Minolta AF 24-85mm F3.5-4.5 and was really impressed with the AF speed. It seems as fast as the similar Canon USM zoom.

Yes, that one. I never tried it on the A7R4.

IIRC you bought the a7R mkiv .
I'm thinking of getting one today . How does that lens hold out on the 61mp sensor ?
I've used mine on my a900 and was happy , with OSPDAF focus should be spot on all the time .
I've a lot of A mount lenses , so with the LA-EA5 available , my main consideration is if I would need to upgrade my lenses .

Yes, I have a previously used A7RIV now. I was waiting for a discount on the LA-EA5, and it finally happened.

I had sold the 24-85 the day the LA-EA5 arrived. That is why I tried it out first. It is definitely not designed for digital sensors which probably hurts it optically away from the center. This one had some bubbles in the front group. I recommend using an FE kit zoom instead.

Native FF lenses I already have are the Sony 28-70mm , the 28mm f/2 and 50mm f/1.8 .
So I guess that'll do for a start .

Have you tried the Sony/Minolta 24-105mm A mount lens on the a7Riv ?
That's another I have and use on my a900 .

I don't remember if I have tried yet, but it is here. I am sure it works fine. It is a lot smaller than the FE 24-105 F4 OSS, but that big, new lens is pretty nice.

My old Minolta 24-105 is currently mounted on my A7Riv. Focus works as it should. (There are only two of my A-mount lenses that that have not focused well with the A7Riv & LA-EA5)

The lens still has its recognised flaws, but it hasnít become worse with the 61 MP sensor. It is still a fairly compact walkaround lens that provides a bit more range than my 24-70. I just like using it.

Maybe Iíll replace it with the FE 24-105 - I sold another lens today so I have some lens money to reinvest - but I donít feel an urgent need to do so.
For sale - various A-mount lenses

Thanks .
A possibility at some point , but I'm still looking at using what I already have , both A and E mount plus some Canon EF lenses.
