In fact, and unlike most here, i don't think that what we shall see in the next few days from Sony is what many here do hope for. There is another, "high end" EVIL camera that should be provided later. Of course, we can expect other brands to move forward as well and then the question is at what point one should spend the money :) |

^^ The never-ending question of whether to be an "early adopter" or not. It's usually a mindset that determines one to be an early adopter. I.e. once an early adopter, always an early adopter, no matter the product category or brand involved.

While I've been a huge proponent of a high end mirrorless camera for a while, I'm warming up to the idea of a very simple, small camera with a touchscreen. Just give me a standard prime and A and M mode, and it'll be a nice A900 compliment for me.

I'd agree in that I really don't expect those NEX cameras to be designed to appeal to the enthusiast looking for a lightweight/small alternative to complement his DSLR. I'm nevertheless pretty excited to see what kind of solution they came up with to integrate stills and video. After all those ILC's are the first cameras to carry the new APS-HD sensor that is going into the future DSLRs (if there are any...just kidding). |

I dont expect them to enter with a enthusiast model either. But I am still excited about these early models. Hd video with r big sensor and r small camera body will atract new folks to alpha.
More advanced models should follow once Sony has built up a userbase. Hopefully the price is right (lets hope they keep up the tradition of r agressive price model early on)! |

forgive my ignorance but... what are these new EVIL sony cameras?
are they basically the sony version of the micro four thirds system? in other words will the lens from the other mirco 4/3 cameras work? or will this be a completely new format? short simple answer please ![]() |

It'll be a completely new format.
When it comes out will be anyone's guess, though I do recall the 2/3x0 bodies coming out around the April/May timeframe last year... |

But 18 May is a Tuesday and that would fit in with other rumours that are doing the rounds for a May announcement and June delivery date.
So far Gustav has been more right/ less wrong than many others. Anything better than 100% wrong is better than most of us. Except of course unless you predict an announcement will be made for something about the time of Photokina. |

The interface seems very dumbed down to me. I had hoped it would be more advanced and not aimed at the point and shoot crowd. They could have taken a lesson from Leica rather than Olympus. Frankly the only cameras Sony now makes has any appeal to me are the ff ones. I do think EVIL is the future, hopefully some ffs. I am just glad I got the a850 and can use it until the distant future and enjoy its ruggedness, high resolution, and great viewfinder. I think the viewfinder is one of the most important things in determining a camera's usefulness and appeal. I wish but don't count on it that EVILs will advance to the level of a real pentaprism (not a penta-mirror) but I'm not holding my breath.

Something just struck me ... why is it that when Sony got into DSLRs, everyone laughed, said Sony isn't a camera company, it's a gadget company (despite Sony's pro video division and the fact that they make sensors for everyone else) yet Panasonic has crept into the scene with a reputation for building good cameras for photographers ?
Maybe Panasonic was never the company people love to hate like Sony is. But Polaroid, Casio, Kodak and other "non-camera" companies were never respected. I guess maybe because Panasonic started quietly, started making some better-than-average cameras, including the LX3 (the compact everyone had been waiting for) ? But except for a couple models, most of their digicams are the same as everyone elses; tiny sensor, slow lens, fits in a pocket. Maybe because the GF1 is a photographers camera while Sony NEX appears to be a family vacation camera ? It's just interesting to me how Panasonic managed to "sneak in". |

Keep in mind that Panasonic is almost completely about m4/3s. They have to strech their system to upper level as best as they can. Their 4/3s system is not off the quality Olympus ones is. And for sure not Alpha A450-A900 levels. Even when Sony is not close to Canon and Nikon in many fields. I think we can agree that the A-Mount cameras still be very good products. And we all hope that Sony does not give up on them. No one can seriously say how the field of compact system cameras grows and how they will reduce sales of mirror DSLRs. Nor do we know how Panasonic, Sony, (the often dead called) Olympus, or Samsung will take market shares. This new market gives an interesting change to the market. And the missing of Canon and Nikon is also an interesting indicator that can give very different ideas... |
