You think Canons and Nikons don't suffer from errors or failures? Go read Canon and Nikon forums, you'll see they have their fair share of problems. This is the reason any real pro has at least one backup camera. Better is to have 3 cameras. It allows you to use two different lenses without switching, and have a backup in case something goes wrong. With that said, backup lenses, batteries, and memory cards are also important. |

No truer words were ever spoken. I'm having a completely different set of issues with the a7R. The list is too long. The reviewers don't know. These EVF Sony's are very slow in startup and use. They are very unpredictable. a7 series is a clunky ergonomic train wreck with even less compatibility (lens/flash) than the new A's. It just sits in the bag now waiting for a tilt/shift assignment. a77 reserved for video only. Still reaching for the a900/700 more than anything. Those old cameras are nimble on their feet compared to the new toys. I was ready to finally get an a99 until I saw this thread. Just don't know what to make of it all. I get angry if I think about it too much. a900 makes me smile. Don't know why I thought I needed anything more. |

I have had the sticky wheels on both A900 and A99.
I used "Precision Electronics Cleaner" (spry can purchased at Radio Shack). I held the camera (lens pointing up so the excess cleaner would drip away from the back. After spaying I immediately spun the wheels several times and then followed with compressed air. I then used a thin piece of cleaning paper to slide into and under and above the wheels for additional contact cleaning. I pulled the cleaning paper back and forth to clean inside contacts. After my procedure the wheels worked smoothly as they should. I really don't see the sticky wheels as a high level issue because the maintenance is so simple (easier than removing stubborn dirt from the sensor). I definitely would not send my camera to Sony Repair for this. I have had similar issues with other non-camera electronic equipment. Edited by William Curtindale - 27 April 2014 at 02:23 |

Afaik, there are 2 separate issues with these cameras - the erratic and skipping behaviour with a900's wheels and the physically sticky nature of a99's. Now, my a900 has always felt the same, tactile with clear steps between clicks. However it developed bad skipping action where one click with the wheel could jump say 2 full stops instead of 1/3 stop. I kinda cured that with Photoshoper's detailed instructions, but eventually I was forced to take the camera under repair after maybe 10 cleaning cycles.
I haven't heard any skipping or erratic wheel action with a99, just the annoying sticky nature of it. I guess it's not the electronical contacts but the way it's build (weather sealing?). So are saying your method cured the stickyness of a99? If so, that's going to be my way also. |
