I was interested to read the comments of Dodge (and others) on Page 6 which helped to crystallise my thoughts such as they are. I admit that I don't 'do' street photography but I have seen plenty of images which speak to me not at all, probably why I've chosen thus far to abstain. Anyway, we have a Club Member who is very much a "Street Tog" and who recently challenged us abstainers to 'dip a toe in the water'. A few of us took up the challenge, boarded a train and proceeded to lurk suspiciously around the streets of Bristol; nobody was arrested.

It's hard to assess one's own images so I'm posting some here in the expectation of some pithy comment that will lead me to a better understanding of the genre.

#1 STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
This is my first attempt; supposed to be humorous but I think I'll redo it on a cobbled street.

#2 STREET PHOTOGRAPHER
This is one of the guys on the trip' whatever he's thinking of shooting, it's giving him a real problem not to say acute indigestion.

A7rM2 * FE 85/1.4 GM * iso100 * f/2.2 * 1/1250th (0EV)

#3 GOT MY EYE ON YOU

A7rM2 * FE 85/1.4 GM * iso100 * f/2 * 1/1600th (0EV)

#4 SO WHICH WAY TO DEBENHAMS?

A7rM2 * FE 85/1.4 GM * iso100 * f/2 * 1/50th (0EV)

Pithy comments? Okay, I'll give it a go...

From page 6 reading Dodge's observation that to him, street photography should "[...] provoke a reaction other than 'So what?'"

I'm on board with his observation.

Willem's backstory to his image helps give context, additional meaning to the image that wasn't immediately apparent to me as a viewer. To be honest I might have not stopped on that image because at first glance it didn't hold my attention. However, with his given observation and context regarding the meaning of the image I became more interested in exploring the image and its context.

Looking at the images on page 6, those images fall into my 'so what?' category with the exception of KoBra64's image because it's a bit unusual - I stopped to look at it out of curiosity even without a backstory.

When I look at Robert Frank's images in the book The Americans, I find a lot of context with at-the-moment and after-the-moment, or historically later social and historical interest. And to be honest a few fall into my 'So what?' category.

Personally I find the genre more interesting with examples of imagery that provoke emotion, has social interest, tells a story, provides a glimpse into an interesting moment of time,.. But I also appreciate that different people observe imagery differently, have different values and interests, etc. And so I'm resolved to the appreciation that not everyone will like the same image and not everyone will have interest in the same genres.

Hope I was a little bit pithy but not too much.

Interesting, to me it is a "so what?" picture. The only very slightly interesting thing is a man standing in the window, somewhere in the picture - but as a picture? Mwah, not interesting at all (Sorry, Peter)

Well for me the story is in the Dancers and the Violinist; personally, whilst not wishing to offend, I'd execute a fairly hefty crop.

Not at all. Although I'm a newcomer to this Genre, I seem to be in the camp looking for human interest/emotion rather than 'Documentary' but maybe I will be swayed, who knows. Here are a few that caught my interest ...

Maffe's Selfie (page 5)
Stormvogel's Contrast (page 5)
GlassEye's Along the Canal (page 6) - Makes me smile and ... how did the girls get up there?
onsplekkie's Window Shopping (page 9)
ombre's Old Lady (page 10)
N.Lönngrén's Last Hug (page 10)
Freyr's No22 Tram (page 11)
Freyr's Train (page 13)
Stanbury's Morgan Freeman and Friend (page 12)

Very nice. I like how the eye is naturally drawn to the couple and stays there, even though it's a busy scene with a lot to take in.
Also the couple walking straight at the shooter while everyone else is walk elsewhere makes it natural that the viewer looks at them.

Thanks Sashi, you exactly pointed out one of the reasons why I like the shot myself as well.

Here's something similar (but not as good in my mind)

NEX6 + Super Tak 150/4

ISO 6400 and 1/100th handheld make the shot a little too soft for me, adding some PP grain helped a bit, but not enough

But I do like the picture, Pieter. Gives the impression of Tri-X or HP5 forced to 1600 ASA.
Quit a lot of ALPHA and NEX gear, a nice collection of Sigma lenses, Dynax and M42 stuff, Gitzo's, Visico's and lots of video-equipment

Thanks Dick, that was my idea as well, but I would have liked the lady on the bike to be a bit sharper. All the rest quite soft is OK, but as the single point of attention it's a bit too vague now.
