Hi.
I took a number of sunset pics recently, including this one. The colours were increasing through the evening and this picture was an early one, where the colours were less intense, though I like the composition. I have therefore modified the tone curve to push the leaves into (more or less) full black and increased the colour saturation a little to match what I remember later on. ![]() My questions are: 1) How do you feel about the colours? too bright or not bright enough? 2) Would you crop this, and if so where? I have tried various crops and can't decide if they are any improvement on the uncropped image above. Thanks. |

Hi Miranda,
I fear your post slipped under the radar. I may not have the most informed eye but hopefully my response will bump the thread if nothing else! I like the loose diagonal division of the frame - very pleasing. And the soft marbled sky is lovely. (I'd guess that's what attracted you to take the shot?) In response to your questions: 1) "Too bright" - though I'm not certain what you meant! Personally I'd dial down the saturation & try dialling down the value/brightness as well. 2) No I wouldn't crop it down. If you had some pixels on the top to "put back" I'd see how they looked. A couple of minor things: a) To me, the white balance looks slightly green. b) There's some slightly strange colouring at the bottom - particularly bottom right corner. I suspect it's real rather than an artefact but I'd probably "correct" it anyway. c) This is a very small jpeg file. That's not a criticism of the photo but it makes it hard to evaluate. I see some suggestions of artefacts at the border between the leaves & skies that I suspect are due to the small file size. Cheers Tony |

1) colors look fine to me. The only thing is it looks like the twigs have purple fringing, if you can get rid of that you can boost the colors even more.
2) I don't think there is anything to crop other than the left edge just a little. I like the decision to silhouette the leaves ![]() |

Hi, Guys!
Thanks for the response. Yes, I was attracted by the marbled sky - I took a lot of pictures as the sun set and the colours changed, some with the leaves and a few with rooftops. I exposed for the sky, and found the leaves weren't completely black so I helped a bit in PP. The original picture was pretty sharp, and I didn't notice PF on the leaves, but it may be a result of compressing. To be honest, I thought the things I wanted an opinion on would still be valid on a small pic! The clouds were a kind of red/yellow but the bare bits showed blue, which is probably what you can see in the bottom right and may have affected the yellows slightly. If anyone's interested I'll post another pic or two from the same evening. |

Color looks okay to me.
Might go with a 16:9(HD crop), but the photo you have above is fine as is! Scott (fun coloring) B |
