Te Puke O Tara around Sunset
A couple of days ago, I returned to a location I'd scoped out on a bicycle ride a few weeks ago. The site is called Te Puke O Tara (Hampton Park in English). It is the original farm and chapel of a wealthy settler from England, the Reverend Gideon Smales, who arrived in New Zealand in around 1850. In 1859 he completed the chapel on this 160 hectare farm, built around an extinct volcanic cone. The chapel (St John's), doesn't feature in these images; just the decaying farm stables. Auckland City has around 50 volcanic cones scattered throughout. Most are deemed extinct but quite a few, including the massive Rangitoto in Auckland Harbour, are merely sleeping. It was common for settlers to build on these sites as they were littered with handy volcanic rocks they could use to construct the buildings and walls they needed. Of course the volcanic soil too was perfect for farming. The position of the old stables pictured here, on top of a volcanic mound, means that the buildings are lit from one side by the setting sun and on the other by the rising sun. With that in mind, I set out before sunset a few nights ago to capture angles and views in that light. I followed that up the next morning: rising at 5.30am, I headed out to the site to capture the same buildings at sunrise. I'll split up the images into those two groups; sunrise and sunset, and post them on the named threads here on Dyxum. I shot all images with my Sony ILCE-7R using various lenses. Some were Minolta AF with the LA-EA4 adapter and others were FE mount Laowa manual focus lenses. I also used my Mamiya 645 45mm f2.8 lens mounted on a Mirex tilt / shift adapter to capture panorama and enlarged resolution images by stitching individual files together with Microsofts' Image Composite Editor (ICE). 1. ![]() Te Puke O Tara by Michael J Breen, on Flickr Sony A7R Laowa 105mm f2 T3.2 STF 1/160 sec @ f2.8 iso 100 -0.70EV 2. ![]() Te Puke O Tara by Michael J Breen, on Flickr Sony A7R Laowa 105mm f2 T3.2 STF 1/160 sec @ f2.8 iso 100. -0.70EV 3. ![]() Te Puke O Tara by Michael J Breen, on Flickr Sony A7R Laowa 15mm f4 Shift Macro 1/100 sec @ f8 iso 100. -0.70EV 4. ![]() Te Puke O Tara by Michael J Breen, on Flickr Sony A7R Laowa 15mm f4 Shift Macro 1/60 sec @ f8 iso 100. -0.70EV |

Thanks Fred. It's a good lesson: when you find a good location, go back a few times when the light is better |

I like #7 best. Deep colours and bold shadow of the tree makes it for me ![]() Edited by Micholand - 22 October 2021 at 21:35 |
