This might be more of a British thing, but sparked by a couple of comments in my Photo 150 challenge I think there might be scope to explore the humble telephone box.
Now a relic of another age these were once part of the vital infrastructure of local communities. They also had a striking design, and in the UK the K2 box designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, one of Britain's great 20th century architects, was voted one of Britain's top 10 design icons in 2006. Some boxes have been left to wither away, others get collected by BT and sold to commercial intersts elsewhere, and some get retained and find a new use - as a museum display, noticeboard, library, defibrillator holder, and so on. I thought we already had a public phones themed thread, but I cannot find it. Probably on another site. I assume this is also for other kinds public phones then phone booths. Here is a public phone that is not in a booth but sheltered from the sun if the sun is in the right position:

We have one in Jersey City. I wonder if it's original.
Now there is a carousel token machine inside :) ![]() |

Here are a pair of pairs in Norwich.
One of these redundant boxes has been repurposed as a cactus shop - closed on Mondays I fear. ![]() The second pair are available - for sale or rent. ![]() |

I've seen enough of these red ones, anybody has a blue Tardis?
And Thom Scott just uploaded a video about the red ones an hour ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecVHYg4_vZw |

Great new thread. Most of the villages around my neck of the woods have an old telephone box in them and at least one is still a working BT phone! (who really uses a phonebox in this day and age?) But most of them have been re-purposed as either community libraries where you are invited to take a book and leave a book in return (although some have been taped off during the pandemic), or to house a defibrillator.
I shall go on a new mission and see how many I can find, and take stereo photos of them ![]() |

The classic red telephone boxes were superseded by this utilitarian design. At least one of them actually has a phone in it.
