Telephone boxes

This might be more of a British thing, but sparked by a couple of comments in my Photo 150 challenge I think there might be scope to explore the humble telephone box.

Now a relic of another age these were once part of the vital infrastructure of local communities. They also had a striking design, and in the UK the K2 box designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, one of Britain's great 20th century architects, was voted one of Britain's top 10 design icons in 2006.

Some boxes have been left to wither away, others get collected by BT and sold to commercial intersts elsewhere, and some get retained and find a new use - as a museum display, noticeboard, library, defibrillator holder, and so on.

There is a phone inside, but it is a home tabletop model rather than the original pay phone (the sign on top advertises a card phone), but even that is disconnected.

One of these redundant boxes has been repurposed as a cactus shop - closed on Mondays I fear.

Vintage telephone box in Fiskars

Here's a genuine Dutch one, placed at the railway station in Haaksbergen of the Museum Buurtspoorweg.

It's fully complete with an original payphone and a whole rack of telephone books, but unfortunately it's not connected (as my brother found out )
