If I really get the A99 before the weekend, I will test the AF-D with CZ 24-70 and with the 70-400 (and might compare it with the 50/1.4).
But I would also want to know the answers to sybersitizen questions...

Some of those questions are answered here and in this Sony patent description.

Questions about the focus limiter function.

Does the camera register which lens your using when you set it - like the AF microadjust - and retain this if you change lenses and then come back to the original one? Or do you have to reset it every time you change lenses? Does the camera recognize a TC + lens combo as seperate than the lens alone?

Thank you sybersitizen. The first link gave me some intuition about it. Later, when I have time, I will try to dig into the patent (although I usually find patents very non-informative, even in my research field...).

I was afraid it was too good to be true.

It took a while to figure out what was going on. The focus is quick and nimble with my Sigma 500/4.5 APO EX DG but when I turn on the range limiter it just runs from one end to the other of the range I set without finding focus even if the whole range is selected. If I turn it off the focus works well again.

Auto focus Range works with my Sony 70-300G.

Add to this AF-D does not work with any of my lenses.

Dennis, might this not be an issue with the Sigma lens and the fact that Sigma "back engineers" its lenses rather than getting a license to use the firmware/software? It is well known that some Sigma lenses need to get "re-chipped" when a manufacturer brings out a new camera with which a Sigma lens is not compatible. My guess is that is what you have experienced and you should contact Sigma.

Hm .. sorry to hear this.

Any other a99 owner that has found any lens not working properly when AF range is enabled?
If so, i believe i should add AF range compatibility in our lens database as well (AF-D will be added of course).

Does the Sigma 500 f/4.5 have a distance encoder? If not, the look-up table might be confusing it for some other lens if it re-uses a lens ID.

momech asked before, but I am also curious about it:
When using AF-D compatible lens with TC, is it still compatible?
I might have to wait until Sony adds the old 300/2.8 to the supported lenses to answer that...

I need to try the range function. So far I have only shot AF-D with my 24-70 and haven't tried the range limiter or even a different lens.

Based on the LCD and speed the AF-D is impressive. I am hoping DxO supports the A99 soon!

I talked to Sigma and they are checking into whether 500/ 4.5 APO EX DG can be updated. Mine is an older one that doesn't have the latest firmware. They are checking and may be able to rework it. This might not be a problem with the newest version of this lens.

Cheers,

Has anyone had a proper chance to compare AF-C to AF-D when taking pics of moving subjects yet?   My impression is AF-D seems more likely to stay locked on if other subjects move across the selected AF point (AF-C just refocuses on the intruder) but I haven't given it a real work out yet. It also seems to try to keep locked onto the same main target if you allow the AF point to stray off your intended target so this might help when following moving subjects, especially at higher frame rates with slideshow effects.
