So, the first challenge of 2022 will be a one week A-mount retirement party. The thought for that was born in the Gone for good? ... But not forgotten thread that was started after Sony withdrew all their A-mount lenses from their website. Since people usually retire at the end of a month the challenge will run from the last day in Februari, monday the 28th until sunday March 6.

We will have two threads per day for the A-mount retirement party:

The first daily thread is for one photo per day taken that week (can be pic-a-day but doesn't have to be) with an A-mount lens on an A-mount body or via an LA-EAx adapter on an E-mount body. For people who don't have any more A-mount lenses we will allow to use one other "retired" mount to be used for the week via an adapter on an E-mount body. But only one mount for the week per participant and it really needs to be no longer in production. So for instance Minolta MD is OK, Leica M is not

The second daily thread is for your best 7 A-mount lens shots from your full archive (no date/day of the week restriction), and again it can be on an A-mount body or via an adapter on an E-mount body.

And as always we will have a talk, outtake and thumbnail thread.

Everybody is free to think of extra challenges they want to add to their contribution.

Ask any questions you have or your intention to take part below. I'll keep a running list of participants in this thread, obviously I'm in

Gosh Pieter, you have me tempted. My one and only A-mount digital camera I have left is a Konica Minolta 7D, but the last time I used it (years ago) I finally experienced the FFB issue and it shut down. I put it away then and haven't touched it until today. I now have a battery on charge to see if it will fire up again, or is it dead completely? (I can't remember if the fault meant total brick or intermittent).

But I do have an LA-EA4 and an LA-EA5 and the following lenses for my A-mount film cameras:
Minolta AF 300mm f4 APO G
Minolta AF 75-300mm f4.5-5.6
Minolta AF 70-210mm f4
Minolta AF 28-135mm f4-4.5
Minolta AF 35-105mm f3.5-4.5 Macro
Minolta AF 17-35mm f2.8-4 D

Please let me see if the 7D comes back to life and think about it. I have a shameful history of starting challenges with enthusiasm and failing to complete them

Brian

When the idea of a retirement (farewell?) party for A-mount came up there immediately came to my mind the image of a funeral procession in New Orleans (we should have some music for the party!).

So please count me in. I wouldn't like to miss it. It's probably something that can be repeated on a yearly basis!

I have checked my stock of A-mount lenses (to be used with the LA-EA5):

Sony CZ 24mm F/2.0 ZA SSM Distagon
Minolta AF 35-70mm F/4.0
Tamron-F AF Tele-Macro 35-135mm F/3.5-45
Minolta AF 50mm F/3.5 Macro
Sony CZ 50mm F/1.4 ZA SSM Planar
Sigma 70mm F/2.8 Macro EX DG
Sony 85mm F/2.8 SAM
Sony CZ 85mm F/1.4 ZA Planar
Minolta AF 100mm F/2.0
Minolta AF 135mm F/2.8
Sony 135mm F/2.8 T/4.5 STF
Sony CZ 135mm F/1.8 ZA Sonnar
Minolta AF HS 200mm F/2.8

I still have two film bodies for A-mount and I am considering to use one of them as an add-on (will there be an outtakes thread?).

Thank you, Pieter, for organizing the procession!

Excellent idea for a challenge but it will be a hard one given the limited daylight and a busy work schedule. But naturally I'm in!

I could not let go of my A99, I hardly use it but the value for me is higher than the 2nd hand value so why should I. And I'm a photogear hoarder anyway.

The A-mount lenses to select from:

Sony 2.8/16-35 ZA SSM
Sony AF 20mm 1:2.8
Minolta AF 24mm 1:2.8 RS
Minolta AF 28mm 1:2
Minolta AF 35mm 1:2
Minolta AF 50mm 1:1.4
Minolta AF 50mm 1:1.7 (my first Minolta)
Samyang 1.4/85
Sony AF 100 F2.8 Macro
Minolta AF 100mm 1:2
Carl Zeiss Sonnar 1.8/135 ZA

I'll bite!
Is M42 considered retired? If so I can join with the 135/2.8 Pentacon. Otherwise I'll just trawl through the archives..

I think for practical purposes we can consider M42 as "retired", there are still some M42 industrial lenses being sold (Zeiss Interlock) but I don't think they are still available as normal consumer lenses. Also there's no more M42 cameras being produced, there was a kickstarter project but I don't think that got off the ground. So for this challenge M42 is fair game (as long as you use it for all your 7 submissions)
