Wonderful images, but in this case I really feel there's nothing to be gained and so much to be lost by leaving out the brilliant colouring.

Sure.
First of all: You have to try new software somehow
Then, it's true that the colors get lost. But the structure of the feathers and the sunlit waves shows better.
But fear not: I will turn to other subjects in my quest to try the NIK software.
