Meet The Peace Lagoon, or the Eastern Lagoon, which is just near my work. It was built in order to add some "coast" line to Eilat, to allow further hotels and beaches.

It was designed and planned by the best engineers and digging started in 1993 with the mayor and the minister of tourism celebrating and being photographed near the tractors. Millions dollars were invested. It was opened in 1995. There were several hotels planned to be built around it, and some other attractions, which according to the plan were supposed to quickly pay back the investment.

Soon after the opening celebrations, it turned out that the water is murky, the bottom of the lagoon is covered with unpleasant dark material and there is a bad smell. No one dared to get into the water. No one wanted to build an hotel near by...

Apparently, the engineered were counting on the tide to allow water circulation, but the minor tide in this area is not enough... The engineers, on the other hand, blames the town of Eilat for using fertilizers for the grass and trees around the lagoon, for building a breakwater near the opening of the lagoon and allowing sewage to get to the sea just near the opening of the lagoon.

Of course the town of Eilat sued the engineers, and it was only in 2015, 20 years after the opening, that the court made a decision (shortly, the court decided that both sides are to blame and the engineers should pay only part of the amount needed for the recovery of the lagoon). During the trail, the town of Eilat did nothing in an attempt to improve the situation - they wanted to prove that there is nothing to do with the lagoon and the engineers need to pay the entire cost of the digging. Only recently, there are new plans for hotels and attractions in this area...

Nevertheless, in pictures this lagoon can look actually attractive... Here are some photos from one afternoon last week:

A 20 year court battle over a "peace lagoon"

Indeeed nice pictures and with proper care something nice can be made out of it. I like the first and third best, in the second the background buildings are more of a distraction to me than an element of the composition.
Mind the bandwidth of others, don't link pictures larger then 1024 wide or 960 pix high, see here

That's an interesting, if sorry, story Shay. From your fine images I'd guess there was quite a sum of money invested in the lagoon and surrounds. TFS
C & C always welcome

"The Creature from the Peace Lagoon" - they should try a horror/SciFi movie from here I guess given that story!

A sorry tale indeed but so consistent with, what sounds like, a degree of poor planning foresight and a lack of understanding of environmental input/impact from both sides.

Mind you, saying that, at least it allows a relatively uncluttered background for images such as these - my favourite of the set being #2 (even with the contrail) having the tree silhouette balancing out the shot very well.

I guess this will be a 'watch this space' sort of location in the next 10 - 15 years?!

Thanks for sharing these and the story and best regards, Neil.

Thank you all for your comments!

Neil, believe it or not, at the beginning there were rumors about a monster living in the water...

I may add some picture when things are getting moving there... Actually, there are already requests for tender for doing the recovery work and for developing the area, but it doesn't necessarily mean that any thing is going to be done soon...

For now, at least you have a nice spot for photography Shay!
Any birds there, or are they scared off by the monster (or smell) as well?

Thank you Fred!

Actually, no birds over the lagoon... I guess the monster ate them all... All around this area you have a lot of birds and great birding spots, but I've never seen a bird over the lagoon... I guess it says everything about the water...
