This won't interest many of you who aren't interested in these silly little sensors , but i know a lot of you are fairly dedicated to APS-C for a few years yet (like myself). I got an email from Tokina (Japan) today:

Dear Sirs,

All Tokina lenses fit on Nikon and Canon cameras only.
We are now studying and developing Sony alpha mount
and will make a publicity as soon as ready, possibly end
parts of this year.

So expect an announcement autumn-ish time I guess. Incase anyone had forgot, they quite a few nice wide options: Tokina lenses.

I´ve been waiting for something like this to happend, since I´ve tried their 16-50/2.8 and 50-135 and WOW, they rule!

that would be great - their 10 - 17 wideangle / fisheye zoom is intriguing and really one of a kind as far as I know.

I thought they were pretty good "bang for buck". Used to have a Tokina 400mm ATX prime which was excellent and so sharp. Only sold it because it was too heavy alongside my (then) Sigma 500mm APO.

The Tokina 300/2.8 is a terrific lens.

Then I don't really get the 1st sentence of the OP. Why FF shooters wouldn't be interested by the announcement?

The current Tokina lineup is mostly APS-C and most of them (11-16, 16-50, 50-135, 12-24, 35 macro, 10-17) have never been available for Sony.

In the past they supported Minolta and had a load of FF options - these didn't stop working on Sonys once Tokina dropped support for new models!    The 80-400 is definately floating around in Minolta mount and the 100macro might be, they also had fairly well regarded 28-70 and 80-200 zooms which you can still get, as well as some other stuff.

I also have experienced Tokina lenses in the past (Olympus MF mount) and I always had very high regard for them.

I too would like to try the 10-17mm WA/FE as mentioned above.

I think it also indicates that Sony might be being seen as increasingly 'mainstream' by Tokina which can only be good for the mount - FF or APS-C!

I always thought the 10-17mm was an interesting lens, but after seeing reviews I'm not so convinced. It seems really nicely distorted at 10mm, but upwards the distortion seems to fade off quite quickly... To which point I think most would just use it at 10mm, where the Sig 10/2.8 DT FE may be more useful. But this is just speculation from seeing reviews, nothing more.

What I find most interesting is the 11-16/2.8 and the 16-50/2.8, although I haven't seen any reviews for the former.

Sorry Winwalloe, my messages are confused, but i think ABramley cleared that up. Most of their stuff today is APS-C glass, but they've made some well respected FF glass in the past.

I looked for a 'new' 80-400 in A-mount last year - absolutley nothing in the UK from what I could determine. Perhaps available used?

conory - the 80-400 is already available in Minolta mount - it's one of those that's been in production so long it predates the 'dropping Sony' strategy. Unfortunately it's not rated all that well - glacial AF IIRC. Should be in the lens database.
