Marienplatz never heard of this city...
![]() Nicely done Maarten, though I would have stepped back one footstep to get the full arch of the old town hall tower. Then again you're excused, because I know how busy that part of the city can be. The shot would also perfectly fit into the Munich city thread. So when did you stop by Munich this year? Next time we could target a mini-meet, if possible ![]() |

Maarten,
A classic view of Marienplatz, and very nicely framed. Also nice to see the twin belltowers of the cathedral in full view, rather than shrouded in scaffolding as they were when I was last there. |

Thanks, Addy, but I have to disagree about the building. Perhaps ugliness is in the eye of the beholder. This building grates in its setting, for me, given the memorial purpose of the ruined church.
I’d agree with you about the road, though! |

I like the way you made the Drake's Circus a backdrop that looks nice as a part of the picture. TBH I think the real crime to aesthetics is the ugly as sin road in front. One can discuss whether the shopping mall is ugly, the road is the real abomination. In the end you took a good picture ![]() |

Sometimes people do great jobs in cities ... then, there is Plymouth.
![]() Charles church, Plymouth was entirely consumed by fire in March 1941, a victim of the 'Plymouth Blitz'. After the war the decision was taken to preseve the ruins as a memorial to the 1200+ victims of the bombing raids. However in the early 2000s Drake's Circus shopping centre was built, forming an unwelcome backdrop to the monument. When the development opened in 2006 the shopping centre won the inaugural Carbuncle Cup "for crimes against architecture", as the worst new building in the United Kingdom. ![]() Drake's Circus Here on the north side I shot the photo at an angle to make the road level, but there is an incline and I have adjusted it, using the bus shelter and railings as the guides to being upright. |
