Here's a post on GetDPI on the results of using a front filter to reduce corner smearing with a ZM 35/1.4. It also has a link in there for a similar thread on Fred Miranda Forums.

I assume that corrective optics could be added to correct these issues. Adding a plain filter on the front of a lens changes the focus plane a bit. Adding one at the rear make more substantial changes. Wider lenses are more reactive.
