Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory is the seat of Australia's Federal Government, and was planned from scratch after federation in 1901. It was selected after a stalemate between rivals Sydney and Melbourne could not be resolved, and its siting was determined as being somewhere between those two, and inland out of reach of the longest range naval guns then available. An international design competition was won by Walter Burley Griffin and his wife Marion Mahoney Griffin, disciples of Frank Lloyd Wright - Burley Griffin 1911 Masterplan for Canberra.

The images posted here are general ones, with more detailed postings having been made in Open Views for several significant federal buildings including Australian Parliament House, National Gallery of Australia, Australian War Memorial, High Court of Australia, National Portrait Gallery and the Old Parliament House.

Population around 400,000, and a very sophisticated place for its size, with its high powered bureaucrats, academics at the Australian National University, its embassies and its parliamentarians and staffers.

Nonetheless, it is the butt of some jokes such as comedian Barry Humphries' quote "The wonderful thing about Canberra is that it's only 40 minutes drive before you're back in Australia".

Nice showcase of our nations capital Joe I have been meaning to head on over there for years now particularly to visit the war museum that I have heard so many good things about. One day I will hopefully make it

BTW I find the waterfront apartments very reminiscent to those along the Brisbane River.

Thought I'd add this original drawing of the international design competition winning entry for the design of Canberra by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin (who actually produced the drawings that won the judges over). This framed copy hangs on the wall in the High Court of Australia and the others are in the National Archive. (Couldn't avoid those pesky reflections).

Although the subject of their own posts where you can see more by clicking on the links, I think it's fitting to include a few representative images of Canberra's major public institutional buildings in this thread to make it complete.
